Article Synopsis
  • Traditional tooth preparation can be uncomfortable and risky, but femtosecond lasers provide a precise, non-invasive alternative that minimizes these issues.
  • This study aimed to evaluate how femtosecond laser treatment affects enamel and dentin through a review of in vitro and in vivo studies, following strict guidelines for systematic reviews.
  • After a thorough literature search, 48 relevant studies were identified, focusing on the quality of tooth preparation and the effects of laser parameters, although the overall quality of these studies was not assessed.

Minimally invasive access cavities have been proposed in the last decade to reduce tooth tissue loss during endodontic treatment and mitigate compromised fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Fracture resistance of molars with different types of access cavity design may be affected by restorative materials and aging. Insufficient literature data exist on the effect of cavity design and type of restorative materials on restorative aspects such as material adaptation or photo-polymerization in restricted access cavities.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared new calcium phosphate-based cements, specifically a modified version with acetylsalicylic acid (CPCA), with a known cement, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), focusing on their biological properties and effectiveness.
  • - Cements were synthesized using strontium, copper, and zinc-doped hydroxyapatite, and were tested for compressive strength, setting time, bioactivity, and biocompatibility using human dental pulp stem cells and zebrafish models.
  • - Results indicated that CPCA was more biocompatible and had an improved safety profile compared to MTA and regular calcium phosphate cement, without showing toxicity, while also exhibiting effective antibiofilm properties.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the dentin abrasivity of various whitening toothpastes using a specific measuring method (RDA-PE), focusing on those that contain acids.
  • A total of 100 bovine dentin specimens were tested with different whitening toothpastes, including those with hydrogen peroxide and silica, undergoing extensive brushing to measure abrasion levels.
  • Results showed that hydrogen peroxide toothpastes had lower abrasivity compared to silica toothpastes, and particle content in the toothpaste significantly influenced the overall abrasivity values.

Objective: To measure degree of conversion (DC) of a flowable composite, microtensile bond strength (MTBS) to dentine in the snow-plow technique with/without preheating and temperature in the preheated composite.

Materials And Methods: For DC, snow-plow specimens of Filtek Ultimate Flowable (Flow) and Filtek Bulk Fill (Bulk) (3M) were prepared by light-curing composites simultaneously in standardized molds while in control groups light-curing was separate. DC of Flow was measured using micro-Raman spectroscopy.

Objectives: To answer the PICO(S) question: Is there a difference in clinical longevity between direct and indirect resin composite restorations placed on permanent posterior teeth?

Data: Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) investigating direct and indirect resin composite restorations in posterior permanent teeth were considered.

Sources: Several electronic databases were searched, with no language or date restrictions. The revised Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias (RoB-2) was used to analyze the studies; meta-analyses were run and the certainty of evidence was assessed by the GRADE tool.

This study aimed to (1) comparatively analyze properties of Sr- and Mg-substituted hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based dental inserts; (2) evaluate insert bonding to restorative materials, and (3) evaluate the effect of doped HAP inserts on fracture resistance (FR) of human molars with large occlusal restorations. By ion-doping with Sr or Mg, 3 insert types were obtained and characterized using XRD, SEM, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness. Shear bond strength (SBS) was determined between acid etched or unetched inserts and following materials: Maxcem cement (Kerr); Filtek Z250 (3M) bonded with Single Bond Universal (SBU; 3M) or Clearfil Universal (Cf; Kuraray).

High elution and diffusion of 2-hydroxylethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and camphorquinone (CQ) through dentinal tubules may induce pulp injury and postoperative sensitivity. We aimed to investigate the melatonin protective effect in HEMA- and CQ-treated human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) as well as its relevance in a mechanism for postoperative sensitivity in diabetic patients. hDPCs were exposed to HEMA (5 mM) and/or CQ (1 mM) in the absence and presence of melatonin (MEL) (0.

The antioxidant activity and chemical stability of 6-amino-6-deoxy-L-ascorbic acid (D1) and -methyl-6-amino-6-deoxy-L-ascorbic acid (D2) were examined with ABTS and DPPH assays and compared with the reference L-ascorbic acid (AA). In addition, the optimal storing conditions, as well as the pH at which the amino derivatives maintain stability, were determined using mass spectrometry. Comparable antioxidant activities were observed for NH-bioisosteres and AA.

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is a rare disorder commonly diagnosed in later disease stages when it prominently manifests as malnutrition. We report on a female patient diagnosed with MNGIE at the age of 36. She was severely malnourished due to loss of resorptive surface after several surgical procedures, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has dramatically changed teaching approach in dental schools due to the switch to distance learning and the lack of practice training in direct contact with patients with possible impact on clinical skills of students. The aim of the study was to assess the level of the 2020 final year dental students' self-confidence in performing different dental procedures through specially designed questionnaire and compare it to self-confidence of the 2019 final year students.

Materials And Methods: An anonymous questionnaire consisting of 40 questions regarding self-confidence level in performing 40 different dental procedures and based on five points Likert-like scale was distributed during November 2020 to final year dental students whose studies were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in one semester.

The objective of this work was to measure and correlate the degree of conversion (DC), mechanical properties and monomer elution from self-, dual- and light-cured core composites. Five samples of each of the following materials were prepared for each test: Clearfil (Core, Photo Core, Automix), Bisco (Core-Flo, Light-Core and Bis-Core). DC was determined using FTIR, compressive and flexural strength and modulus of elasticity using a universal testing machine and microhardness using Vickers hardness.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks are caused by excessive activation of the contact system. Understanding how the contact system is activated in HAE, especially in patients with normal C1 inhibitor (HAEnCI), is essential to effectively treat this disease. Contact system activation involves the cleavage of several proteins including Factor XII (FXII), high molecular weight kininogen (HK), prekallikrein, sgp120 (ITIH4) and C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) before the subsequent generation of bradykinin that mediates HAE.

The majority of the drugs which target membrane-embedded protease γ-secretase show an unusual biphasic activation-inhibition dose-response in cells, model animals, and humans. Semagacestat and avagacestat are two biphasic drugs that can facilitate cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Initial mechanistic studies showed that the biphasic drugs, and pathogenic mutations, can produce the same type of changes in γ-secretase activity.
