Background: Children with connatal malformations of the face and of the eyes may run a long diagnostic and narrow therapeutic way. By an early diagnosis, this procedure could become significantly shorter und much easier. PATIENTS HISTOPATHOLOGY: Three clinical observations give typical examples: In correlation to the history of a patient described in 1975 by Meythaler (18) we examined two babies with naevus sebaceus Jadassohn, colobomas of the lids, epibulbar tumors, microphthalmus, and white, vascularized corneal opacifications.

Amaurosis of the right eye occurred in an 18-year-old woman. 17 years later the healthy patient was referred for diagnosis, showing an amaurotic pupil, no protrusion, normal motility and corneal sensitivity, normal morphology of the anterior segment. In ophthalmoscopy optic atrophy with typical retinociliary collateral vessels, calcified and obliterated vessels throughout to the posterior pole and a macular scar.

We report on a 22-year-old white female with bilateral Leber's stellate neuroretinitis occurring 5 weeks after a viral-like illness. Serological tests revealed a seroconversion for Borrelia burgdorferi indicating an etiological connection. During therapy with 200 mg doxycycline daily for 2 weeks on systemically steroids the optic disc swelling and macular star figure resolved.

Visual loss following intranasal injections is extremely rare. A case report of blindness in the only seeing eye after infiltration of the septal mucosa with local anaesthetics and vasopressin is presented. The pathological mechanism and the relationship between different surgical procedures and visual loss are analysed and discussed.

The authors report on two patients with embryonic rhabdocytosarcoma of the orbit. The tumor in a nine-year-old girl was classified histologically as being of differentiated type and was characterized immunohistochemically by myoglobin. In a two-year-old girl an embryonic rhabdocytosarcoma of a less differentiated (intermediate) type was found which was characterized immunohistochemically by desmine.

A 5-year-old boy with deletion of the long arm of chromosome 11 presented with trigonocephaly, bilateral ptosis, epicanthus, antimongoloid lid axes, and bilateral iris coloboma. In order to avoid complication by a torticollis a Guyton-Friedenwald fadenoperation was performed. In 1981 Grosse et al.

Two outpatients presented with disseminated intraocular ischemic infarctions after injection into the lid and in retrobulbar regions. A 34-year-old patient suffered a sudden and permanent loss of vision due to segmental optic atrophy prior to a chalazion excision under local anesthesia in the right upper and lower lids, with 2 ml Novocain 2%. A 55-year-old patient received parabulbar injections of crystalline cortisone with additional Scandicain 1% in the temporal region of the lower lid.

The authors report on 2 patients with direct damage to the optic nerve and retina: In a 25-year-old deaf-mute patient a peripheral iridectomy was performed after lid and retrobulbar anesthesia. The amaurosis noticed immediately after surgery was caused by direct injury to the optic nerve. A 69-year-old patient with high myopia was treated with retrobulbar steroid injections.

The use of surface coils in magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit leads to an increase in spatial resolution. With the first 14 patients in whom we used the method we obtained detailed images of the orbital topography, especially in cases with tumors and foreign bodies, but the method proved to be little use in finding minimal tissue changes of the muscles or of the optic nerve. The use of oblique views without moving the patients, enables the optic nerve to be imaged in one slice.
