This work describes the application of electrochemically produced Caro's acid in a divided electrochemical flow cell for the removal of fourteen CECs from real effluent at a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Ciudad Real, Spain. The results are compared with direct dosing of the reagent (with an ionic/molecular oxidant) and radical-assisted oxidation (activated sulfate radical via photochemical oxidation or hydrogen peroxide-induced radical oxidation). This study sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of these processes.

Given the constant changes in the viral glycoproteins owing to antigenic drift, seasonal influenza vaccines need to be updated periodically and effectiveness often drops due to mismatches between vaccine and circulating strains. In addition, seasonal influenza vaccines are not protective against antigenically shifted influenza viruses with pandemic potential.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCurrent influenza vaccine strategies have yet to overcome significant obstacles, including rapid antigenic drift of seasonal influenza viruses, in generating efficacious long-term humoral immunity. Due to the necessity of germinal center formation in generating long-lived high affinity antibodies, the germinal center has increasingly become a target for the development of novel or improvement of less-efficacious vaccines. However, there remains a major gap in current influenza research to effectively target T follicular helper cells during vaccination to alter the germinal center reaction.

Using NMR spectroscopy, comparative sequence analyses and functional assays we show that, in the absence of the ribosome, a 123-nucleotide sequence encompassing the PRF element of SARS-CoV-2 adopts a well-defined two-stem loop structure that is conserved in all SARS-like coronaviruses. In this conformation, the attenuator hairpin and slippery site nucleotides are exposed in the first stem-loop and two pseudoknot stems are present in the second stem-loop, separated by an 8-nucleotide bulge.

While a number of genetic screens have previously reported SARS-CoV-2 host dependency factors, these approaches relied on utilizing pooled genome-scale CRISPR libraries, which are biased towards the discovery of host proteins impacting early stages of viral replication. To identify host factors involved throughout the SARS-CoV-2 infectious cycle, we conducted an arrayed genome-scale siRNA screen.

In the first, the soil washing is integrated with the bubbling of the oxidant, while in the second, the gas was introduced by a perforated pipe located sub-superficially. Regarding the soil washing treatment, results demonstrate that direct use of ozone is not very efficient, although an important improvement is obtained following activation with hydrogen peroxide or UV light.

We found two closely related HA sequences in the same duck species in 2010 and 2013. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that both sequences belong to the recently discovered H19 subtype, which thus far has remained uncharacterized.

The nonstructural protein 1 (Nsp1) of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) is a virulence factor that targets multiple cellular pathways to inhibit host gene expression and antiviral response. However, the underlying mechanisms of the various Nsp1-mediated functions and their contributions to SARS-CoV-2 virulence remain unclear. Among the targets of Nsp1 is the mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) export receptor NXF1-NXT1, which mediates nuclear export of mRNAs from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

To do this, energy consumptions of the electrolysis using mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes are compared with those required for the production and use of chlorine dioxide in the degradation of methomyl contained in aqueous solutions. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the mediated oxidation process and that this process is competitive with direct oxidation.

Despite intensive research, the mechanism and dynamics of early viral replication are not completely understood, such as the kinetics of the formation of genomic RNA (gRNA), sub-genomic RNA (sgRNA), and replication centers/organelles (ROs). We employed single-molecule RNA-fluorescence in situ hybridization (smRNA-FISH) to simultaneously detect viral gRNA and sgRNA and immunofluorescence to detect nsp3 protein, a marker for the formation of RO, and carried out a time-course analysis.

METHODS: The safety and efficacy of sequential nab-P/Gem-mFOLFOX was compared with standard nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (nab-P/Gem) as first-line treatment in a multi-institutional, randomized, open-label, phase II trial in patients with untreated mPDAC. We randomly assigned patients in a 1:1 ratio to receive nab-P/Gem on days 1, 8, and 15 followed by mFOLFOX on day 29 of a 6-week cycle (experimental group) or nab-P/Gem on days 1, 8, and 15 of a 4-week cycle (control group).

We performed immune profiling studies during breakthrough infections in mRNA-vaccinated hamsters to evaluate hybrid immunity induction. The mRNA vaccine, BNT162b2, was dosed to induce binding antibody titers against ancestral spike, but inefficient serum virus neutralization of ancestral SARS-CoV-2 or variants of concern (VoCs).

In contrast, measles-protective nAb titers are lifelong after measles vaccination, possibly due to persistence of the live-attenuated virus in lymphoid tissues. We, therefore, sought to generate a live recombinant measles vaccine capable of driving high SARS-CoV-2 nAb responses.

Reverse genetics allows for the generation of recombinant infectious viruses from viral sequences or complete viral genomes cloned into plasmids. Using reverse genetics, it is then possible to introduce changes in the genome of infectious viruses for multiple applications.Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a non-segmented, negative-sense RNA virus that has been amenable to manipulation by reverse genetics for more than two decades.

Among these, ORF6 antagonizes interferon signaling by disrupting nucleocytoplasmic trafficking through interactions with the nuclear pore complex components Nup98-Rae1. However, the roles and contributions of ORF6 during physiological infection remain unexplored.

Here, we used unbiased systems approaches to study the host-selective forces driving VOC evolution. We discovered that VOCs evolved convergent strategies to remodel the host by modulating viral RNA and protein levels, altering viral and host protein phosphorylation, and rewiring virus-host protein-protein interactions.
