Purpose: Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is a non-fusion surgical option for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) that requires a postoperative (PO) chest tube. This study evaluates whether 48 h of PO TXA reduces chest tube (CT) drainage and retention compared to 24 h of TXA following VBT for AIS.

Methods: Consecutively treated patients with a diagnosis of AIS who underwent VBT were assessed.

The evolving landscape of head and neck brachytherapy: A scoping review.

Purpose: Since the last update of GEC-ESTRO (Groupe Européen de Curiethérapie - European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology) recommendations for head and neck (HN) brachytherapy in 2017, advances in understanding and management of HN cancers have influenced brachytherapy. We conducted a scoping review to depict the evolution of HN brachytherapy research and practice, and identify emerging topics since the previously published guidelines.

Material And Methods: Systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EBSCOhost, Europe PMC, and Google Scholar databases for articles on HN brachytherapy from 2017 onwards; the search was last done on June 29, 2023.

Urinary neutrophils are a hallmark of urinary tract infection (UTI), yet the mechanisms governing their activation, function, and efficacy in controlling infection remain incompletely understood. Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein (THP), the most abundant protein in urine, uses terminal sialic acids to bind an inhibitory receptor and dampen neutrophil inflammatory responses. We hypothesized that neutrophil modulation is an integral part of THP-mediated host protection.

Antibiotic-associated neutropenia is marked by the depletion of intestinal and associated metabolites in pediatric patients.

Prolonged antibiotic exposure causes dangerous hematologic side effects, including neutropenia, in up to 34% of patients. Murine studies established a link between the intestinal microbiota and hematopoiesis. To identify factors that predispose to neutropenia in pediatric patients, we evaluated changes in microbiota-derived metabolites and intestinal microbiota composition after prolonged courses of antibiotics.

This systematic review has the following aims: (1) to identify measurement tools used globally by healthcare providers to diagnose PCOS in women at elevated risk; (2) to assess the comprehensiveness of these tools regarding mental health and chronic pain; (3) to list strategies for validating, disseminating, and implementing these tools; and (4) to provide future recommendations for experts in healthcare settings. This review utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the Arksey and O'Malley York methodology. Studies were sourced from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, with inclusion criteria focusing on peer-reviewed articles addressing PCOS diagnosis and associated comorbidities.

Purpose: To evaluate the agreement between anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) measurement of preoperative distance from the limbus to the horizontal rectus muscle insertion and intraoperative measurement in patients who have previously undergone strabismus surgery and required reoperation.

Methods: Subjects from two ophthalmological centers were included. Preoperative AS-OCT was used to measure the muscle insertion from the limbus, and intraoperative measurements were obtained using calipers.

Human outbreaks of a novel reassortant Oropouche virus in the Brazilian Amazon region.

The Brazilian western Amazon is experiencing its largest laboratory-confirmed Oropouche virus (OROV) outbreak, with more than 6,300 reported cases between 2022 and 2024. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed 382 OROV genomes from human samples collected in Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia and Roraima states, between August 2022 and February 2024, to uncover the origin and genetic evolution of OROV in the current outbreak. Genomic analyses revealed that the upsurge of OROV cases in the Brazilian Amazon coincides with spread of a novel reassortant lineage containing the M segment of viruses detected in the eastern Amazon region (2009-2018) and the L and S segments of viruses detected in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador (2008-2021).

With the COVID-19 pandemic, behavioural scientists aimed to illuminate reasons why people comply with (or not) large-scale cooperative activities. Here we investigated the motives that underlie support for COVID-19 preventive behaviours in a sample of 12,758 individuals from 34 countries. We hypothesized that the associations of empathic prosocial concern and fear of disease with support towards preventive COVID-19 behaviours would be moderated by trust in the government.

Background And Objectives: Electronic consults (e-consults) are asynchronous, formalized requests by a provider to involve a specialist to assist with decision making. E-consults are an alternative to face-to-face consultation and are a promising strategy to efficiently address certain requests for advice. Background: Hospitalization of patients with DKA creates a significant burden on the US healthcare system. While previous studies have identified multiple potential contributors, a comprehensive review of the factors leading to DKA readmissions within the US healthcare system has not been done. This scoping review aims to identify how access to care, treatment adherence, socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity impact DKA readmission-related patient morbidity and mortality and contribute to the socioeconomic burden on the US healthcare system.

Methods: We collected full-day leg movement of 41 infants in rural Guatemala across 3 visits between birth and 6 months of age using wearable sensors.

Clinical and demographic features of patients undergoing video-capsule endoscopy management: A descriptive study.

Background: Video-capsule endoscopy (VCE) is an efficient tool that has proven to be highly useful in approaching several gastrointestinal diseases. VCE was implemented in Colombia in 2003, however current characterization of patients undergoing VCE in Colombia is limited, and mainly comes from two investigations conducted before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic period.

Aim: To describe the characteristics of patients undergoing VCEs and establish the main indications, findings, technical limitations, and other outstanding features.
