The activity of daptomycin was assessed by using 6,973 gram-positive bacteria isolated at 50 United States hospitals in 2000 and 2001. Among the isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 1,163) collected, the rate of penicillin resistance was 16.1%; rates of oxacillin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus isolates (n = 1,018) and vancomycin resistance among Enterococcus faecium isolates (n = 368) were 30.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii are the most prevalent nonfermentative bacterial species isolated from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients. A surveillance study of 65 laboratories in the United States from 1998 to 2001 found >90% of isolates of P. aeruginosa from hospitalized patients to be susceptible to amikacin and piperacillin-tazobactam; 80 to 90% of isolates to be susceptible to cefepime, ceftazidime, imipenem, and meropenem; and 70 to 80% of isolates to be susceptible to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, levofloxacin, and ticarcillin-clavulanate.

Longitudinal surveillance of Enterobacteriaceae for antimicrobial susceptibility is important because species of this family are among the most significant and prevalent human pathogens. To estimate rates of in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility among hospitalized patients in the United States, data from The Surveillance Network were studied for 14 agents tested against 10 species of Enterobacteriaceae (n = 384,279) isolated from intensive-care-unit (ICU) patients and non-ICU inpatients from 1998 to 2001. Cumulative susceptibility (percent) data for all species of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from ICU patients and non-ICU inpatients, respectively, were ranked as follows: ampicillin-sulbactam (45.

Background: Large population-based cohort studies in areas of high hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence have provided the evidence establishing hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriage as a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver disease. Fewer studies have examined this in Western countries, where both HBV infection and carriage are less common and transmission patterns differ. This is the only prospective population-based study to examine this relationship in Europe.

To identify factors associated with antimicrobial resistance, data were analyzed from 27,828 isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae submitted to the Tracking Resistance in the United States Today (TRUST) surveillance program during 4 consecutive respiratory seasons. From the 1998-1999 season to the 2001-2002 season, the prevalence of azithromycin resistance increased by 4.8% to 27.

Purpose: The migratory response of surface fibroblasts to flexor tendon injury was studied by their selective labeling with a vital dye.

Method: The surfaces of 30 rat deep flexor tendons were bathed in 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine percholate (DiI), a vital dye for 5 minutes. The residual dye was removed by thorough irrigation.

Cerebral angiography using a radioactive radiological contrast medium, Thorotrast, was pioneered by Moniz in Portugal in the 1920s. Thorotrast is retained by the reticuloendothelial system, with a biological half-life of several hundred years, so that such patients suffer lifetime exposure to internal radiation. We studied mortality in Portuguese patients who were administered Thorotrast during the period 1928-1959 and in a comparison group of patients who received nonradioactive contrast agents.

Estrogen deficiency in the aromatase knockout (ArKO) mouse leads to the development of obesity by as early as 3 months of age, which is characterized by a marked increase in the weights of gonadal and infrarenal fat pads. Humans with natural mutations of the aromatase gene also develop a metabolic syndrome. In the present study cellular and molecular parameters were investigated in gonadal adipose tissue from 10-wk-old wild-type (WT) and ArKO female mice treated with 17beta-estradiol or placebo to identify the basis for the increase in intraabdominal obesity.

Antibiotic resistance was prevalent in Gram-positive pathogens collected from 40 sites in 15 European countries during 2000-2001. Among Staphylococcus aureus, 27.3% of all isolates submitted were resistant to oxacillin and ranged from 0% of isolates from the Netherlands to 36.

In vitro surveillance data from across the United States indicate that approximately 10%-20% of urinary Escherichia coli isolates from female outpatients are resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). Alternative therapies for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women include fluoroquinolones and nitrofurantoin, but the activities of these agents against TMP-SMX-resistant isolates are rarely reported. Among TMP-SMX-resistant urinary E.

Background: Increases in penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae have been documented worldwide.

Methods: During 1999 and 2000, 5,015 S. pneumoniae isolates were collected from 13 countries on five continents and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility.

During 1999-2000, 5015 isolates were collected from 13 countries and tested against levofloxacin. Overall, levofloxacin resistance minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC>or =8 mg/l) was found in 40 isolates (0.8%).

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis were determined in two consecutive respiratory seasons in the US and suggested that national susceptibilities to commonly tested antimicrobials changed only slightly from the 1999-2000 to the 2000-2001 respiratory season. However, a significant regional variation in S. pneumoniae susceptibilities was observed, as was a decrease in beta-lactamase rates among H.

We have used a random walk model of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis to investigate the bioenergetic implications of considering the cell cytoplasm to be a uniform well-mixed compartment. Radiotracer studies conducted on hepatocytes harvested from fasted rats and incubated with 40 mM glucose and 10 mM lactate demonstrated simultaneous glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, with net glycolysis. Tracer introduced as glycerol was incorporated both into glucose (via gluconeogenesis) and into pyruvate (via glycolysis).

Steroids play a critical role in gonadal differentiation in birds, reptiles, and amphibia whereas gonadal differentiation in mammals is thought to be determined by genetic mechanisms. The gonads of female mice incapable of synthesizing estrogens due to disruption of the aromatase gene (ArKO) provide a unique model to test the role of estrogen in regulating the gonadal phenotype. We have shown that in the absence of estrogen, genetically female mice develop testicular tissue within their ovaries.

Aromatase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of androgens to estrogens, is present in the mouse gonads, brain, adipose tissue and bone. Depletion of endogenous estrogens in the aromatase deficient mouse (ArKO) caused by the targeted disruption of the Cyp19 gene resulted in an impairment of sexual behaviour and an age-dependent disruption of spermatogenesis. This disruption occurred during early spermiogenesis, due possibly to increased number of apoptotic round spermatids.

Estrogen is synthesized in the testis, both in Leydig cells and seminiferous epithelium, and its importance in spermatogenesis is highlighted by the phenotype of the aromatase knockout (ArKO) mouse. These mice are unable to synthesize endogenous estrogens. The males develop postmeiotic defects by 18 wk of age.
