The basis of these rapid repetitive activities remains unclear, but recent evidence suggests that the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in their formation. Emerging evidence implicating the participation of dendritic cells (DCs) and T cells in various vascular inflammatory diseases such as giant cell arteritis, Takayasu's arteritis, and atherosclerosis led us to hypothesize that they might also participate in the pathogenesis of coronary arteritis in Kawasaki disease (KD). Coronary artery specimens from 4 patients with KD and 6 control patients were obtained. Immunohistochemical and computer-assisted histomorphometric analyses were performed to detect all myeloid DCs (S-100(+), fascin(+)), all plasmacytoid DCs (CD123(+)) as well as specific DC subsets (mature myeloid DCs [CD83(+)], myeloid [BDCA-1(+)] and plasmacytoid DC precursors [BDCA-2(+)]), T cells (CD3(+)), and all antigen-presenting cells (HLA-DR(+)).

Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is a critical growth factor in lung development and is a protective agent after lung injury, although the exact mechanisms of this protective effect have not yet been elucidated. Our laboratory has shown that circulating epithelial progenitor cells can traffic to the airway and that they appear to be derived from the bone marrow. On this basis, we hypothesized that KGF and its putative receptor (KGFR) would be important to these cells.

This study investigates the ability of time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TR-LIFS) to detect inflammation in atherosclerotic lesion, a key feature of plaque vulnerability. A total of 348 TR-LIFS measurements were taken from carotid plaques of 30 patients, and subsequently analyzed using the Laguerre deconvolution technique. The investigated spots were classified as Early, Fibrotic/Calcified or Inflamed lesions.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer mortality in male and female patients in the US. The etiology of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not fully defined, but new data suggest that estrogens and growth factors promote tumor progression. In this work, we confirm that estrogen receptors (ER), both ERalpha and ERbeta, occur in significant proportions of archival NSCLC specimens from the clinic, with receptor expression in tumor cell nuclei and in extranuclear sites.

We hypothesize that remodelling of action potential and intracellular calcium (Ca(i)) dynamics in the peri-infarct zone contributes to ventricular arrhythmogenesis in the postmyocardial infarction setting. To test this hypothesis, we performed simultaneous optical mapping of Ca(i) and membrane potential (V(m)) in the left ventricle in 15 rabbit hearts with myocardial infarction for 1 week. Ventricular premature beats frequently originated from the peri-infarct zone, and 37% showed elevation of Ca(i) prior to V(m) depolarization, suggesting reverse excitation-contraction coupling as their aetiology.

This study investigates the ability of new analytical methods of time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TR-LIFS) data to characterize tissue in-vivo, such as the composition of atherosclerotic vulnerable plaques. A total of 73 TR-LIFS measurements were taken in-vivo from the aorta of 8 rabbits, and subsequently analyzed using the Laguerre deconvolution technique. Background: Pulmonary vein stenosis is a recognized complication of catheter ablation of arrhythmias emanating from the pulmonary vein; however, there is little information on secondary effects of pulmonary vein stenosis on lung tissue.

Methods And Results: A 55-year-old man with a history of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation refractory to antiarrhythmic medication had radiofrequency ablation in April 2003 and July 2003. Although these procedures were successful in resolving the patient's arrhythmia, they were complicated by the development of pulmonary vein stenosis of all four veins and pulmonary hypertension requiring patch annuloplasty of the pulmonary veins in October 2003.

We report a case of severe acute cellular rejection of the cardiac allograft conduction system in a 15-month-old girl who received orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) for congestive heart failure from a congenital heart block. Post-operatively, the patient was treated for clinical evidence of rejection, but did not have electrocardiographic findings of heart block. Six weeks after transplantation, the patient developed sudden-onset bradycardia and died.

However, Myc is also induced in many postmitotic tissues, including adult myocardium, in response to stress where the predominant form of growth is an increase in cell size (hypertrophy) and not number. We tested the hypothesis that phosphorylation of S6 ribosomal protein (S6RP), a downstream target of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, is a biomarker of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) in heart allografts.
