Association of Urinary Epidermal Growth Factor, Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 3, and Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Levels with the Progression of Early Diabetic Kidney Disease.

Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a common cause of chronic kidney disease with around 25-40% of patients with diabetes being affected. The course of DKD is variable, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria, the currently used clinical markers, are not able to accurately predict the individual disease trajectory, in particular in early stages of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the association of urine levels of selected protein biomarkers with the progression of DKD at an early stage of disease.

Background: Eating disorders (EDs) constitute a considerable burden for individuals and society, but adequate and timely professional treatment is rare. Evidence-based Digital Mental Health Interventions (DMHIs) have the potential both to reduce this treatment gap and to increase treatment effectiveness. However, their integration into routine care is lacking.

COVID-19 and mental distress among health professionals in eight European countries during the third wave: a cross-sectional survey.

Even during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic health professionals were facing mental health challenges. The aim of this study was to examine the mental health of doctors, nurses and other professional groups in Europe and to identify differences between the professional groups. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey in 8 European countries.

Uncovering developmental diversity in the field.

Many developmental biologists seldom leave the lab for research, relying instead on establishing colonies of traditional and emerging model systems. However, to fully understand the mechanisms and principles of development and evolution, including the role of ecology and the environment, it is important to study a diverse range of organisms in context. In this Perspective, we hear from five research teams from around the world about the importance and challenges of going into the field to study their organisms of interest.

Allergen detection methods support food labeling and quality assessment at the allergen component level of allergen preparations used for allergy diagnosis and immunotherapy (AIT). Commonly applied enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) requires animal antibodies but potentially shows batch variations. We developed synthetic aptamers as alternative binders in allergen detection to meet the replacement, reduction, and refinement (3R) principle on animal protection in science.

Topical application of a CCL22-binding aptamer suppresses contact allergy.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a prevalent occupational disease with limited therapeutic options. The chemokine CCL22, a ligand of the chemokine receptor CCR4, directs the migration of immune cells. Here, it is shown that genetic deficiency of CCL22 effectively ameliorated allergic reactions in contact hypersensitivity (CHS), a commonly used mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis.

Recognition of psychological comorbidity and psychotherapeutic treatment status of ventricular assist device patients.

Background: Due to its high impact on quality of life and mental health, close monitoring and often psychotherapy is recommended for patients with a ventricular assist device (VAD). This study investigates the psychological comorbidity and the corresponding psychotherapeutic treatment situation of VAD patients. Special attention is also given to the professional perspective VAD team (assistant and senior cardiologists and specialized nurses).

All of whom? Limitations encountered using All of Us Researcher Workbench in a Primary Care residents secondary data analysis research training block.

Objectives: The goal of this case report is to detail experiences and challenges experienced in the training of Primary Care residents in secondary analysis using All of Us Researcher Workbench. At our large, urban safety net hospital, Primary Care/Internal Medicine residents in their third year undergo a research intensive block, the Research Practicum, where they work as a team to conduct secondary data analysis on a dataset with faculty facilitation. In 2023, this research block focused on use of the All of Us Researcher Workbench for secondary data analysis.

Methods A survey was conducted in 2023. The questionnaire contained 64 questions asking ESH-ECs representatives to estimate how patients with CKD are managed.

A Multi-Faceted Binding Assessment of Aptamers Targeting the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical need for the advancement of diagnostic and therapeutic platforms. These platforms rely on the rapid development of molecular binders that should facilitate surveillance and swift intervention against viral infections. In this study, we have evaluated by three independent research groups the binding characteristics of various published RNA and DNA aptamers targeting the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Background: The development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in about 20%-40% of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) aggravates cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Pathophysiology is of increasing relevance for individual management and prognosis, though it is largely unknown among T2D patients with CKD as histologic work-up is not routinely performed upon typical clinical presentation. However, as clinical parameters do not appropriately reflect underlying kidney pathology, reluctance regarding timely histologic assessment in T2D patients with CKD should be critically questioned.
