Dentigerous cysts are common odontogenic cysts of the jaw but are rarely associated with supernumerary teeth. Few cases of large dentigerous cysts associated with anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth have been reported. The English literature has documented only four cases of dentigerous cysts>40 mm in diameter associated with supernumerary teeth.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC)is the second most common malignant liver tumor after hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). ICC is usually ischemic; however, it has variable findings and may be difficult to differentiate from HCC. This study sought to compare the physicochemical properties and sensory test results of a brand-name Acyclovir (ACV) cream and two generic ACV creams. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy revealed changes in absorption spectra attributed to differences in the oil and water content of the 3 creams.

[Evaluation of the safety and efficacy of cefditoren pivoxil fine granules for pediatric use in pediatric patients with laryngopharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes].

Rheumatic fever and acute glomerulonephritis are known to occur secondary to infection with Streptococcus pyogenes, and early elimination of the Streptococcus pyogenes by treatment with an appropriate antibiotic is required. Treatment with penicillins for 10 days has been recommended for Streptococcus pyogenes infections, but cephems are also now being used, and cefditoren pivoxil (CDTR-PI) is listed as one of the recommended drugs in the Guidelines for the Management of Respiratory Infectious Disease in Children in Japan 2007. In the guideline, cefditoren pivoxil (CDTR-PI, Meiact MS fine granules 10% for pediatric use) is recommended as an oral cephem antibiotic for the treatment of the disease. To collect information on the appropriate use of the drug in the clinical setting after issuance of the guideline, we conducted a specific postmarketing study of CDTR-PI in pediatric patients with acute otitis media.

[Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor producing squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis: a case report].

We report a case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. A 71‒year-old woman presented with gross hematuria and leucocytosis of 21,300/mm3 (neutrophil : 86%) in the peripheral blood, but with no focus of infection. Right renal pelvic mass was found at a nearby hospital and she was referred to our hospital for examination and treatment.

In this study, the effective delivery of a drug and the killing effect of tubercle bacilli within macrophages were investigated utilizing the phagocytotic uptake of rifampicin (RFP) that had been incorporated into poly(DL-lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microspheres.

Outcomes of novel transanal operation for selected tumors in the rectum.

Background: Transanal endoscopic microsurgery facilitates access to proximal tumors in the rectum, but there is limited possibility for tumors above the peritoneal reflection because of high cost, training, and long operative time. The objectives of this study are to delineate the results achieved by novel transanal local excision (minimally invasive transanal surgery [MITAS]) with the use of a new anal retractor, stapler device, and several modified surgical techniques for selected rectal tumors.

Study Design: Ninety-one patients with 93 tumors undergoing MITAS between 1993 and 2000 were retrospectively reviewed for prospectively collected data with a minimum 2 years followup and without adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy.

Potential immunosuppressive and antiinflammatory activities of Malaysian medicinal plants characterized by reduced cell surface expression of cell adhesion molecules.

In the search for agents effective against immune-mediated disorders and inflammation, we have screened Malaysian medicinal plants for the ability to inhibit the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) on the surface of murine endothelial cells (F-2), and mouse myeloid leukaemia cells (M1), respectively. Of 41 kinds (29 species, 24 genera, 16 families) of Malaysian plants tested, 10 and 19 plant samples significantly downregulated the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, respectively. Bioassay-directed fractionation of an extract prepared from the bark of Goniothalamus andersonii showed that its ingredients, goniothalamin (1) and goniodiol (2) inhibited the cell surface expression of both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1.

[Microcirculatory derangement and apoptosis in ischemia-reperfusion injury].

This study was undertaken to clarify the involvement of microcirculatory failure and apoptosis in the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia using ICAM-1 knockout mice (K/O) and BCL-2 transgenic mice, respectively. In both permanent and transient focal ischemia, infarcted size of cerebral cortex in ICAM-1 K/O mice was significantly smaller than that in wild type mice. Microcirucaltaory disturbance in the cerebral cortex after permanent and transient focal ischemia was mitigated in ICAM-1 K/O mice compared with that in wild type mice.

[Non-specific neurological complaints and silent cerebral infarction].

To clarify the relationship between non-specific neurological complaints and silent cerebral infarction (SCI), we studied 82 patients (56 +/- 8 years old; mean +/- SD) who presented with at least one complaint (headache, dizziness, forgetfulness) and 76 normal volunteers with no complaints (55 +/- 7 years old). All subjects were evaluated with a questionnaire for complaints and with 0.5 T magnetic resonance imaging of the brain for the presence of SCI.

[Penetrating injury of the head, neck and chest by a nail-gun: a case report].

A very rare case of directly penetrating injury of the head, neck and chest caused by a nail-gun was reported. A 56-year-old male was admitted to our critical care center due to chest injury. On admission, he showed numbness of the hand & leg, left hemiparesis and hypalgesia.

In vitro and in vivo activities of Q-35, a new fluoroquinolone, against Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

The in vitro potency and in vivo efficacy of Q-35, a new fluoroquinolone, against Mycoplasma pneumoniae were investigated by pharmacokinetic studies with M. pneumoniae-infected hamsters. By using fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and tetracyclines as references, Q-35 was found to possess the greatest mycoplasmacidal activity.

Double antibody sandwich ELISA for the detection of rubella virus antigen.

We developed enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of rubella virus antigen, using two monoclonal antibodies, MC-7 and MC-22. The double antibody sandwich ELISA method was carefully standardized and found to be sensitive enough to detect as small as 2.5 ng protein of rubella virus.

Participation of H1-receptors in histamine-induced contraction and relaxation of horse coronary artery in vitro.

The mechanisms of histamine-induced contraction and relaxation were investigated in rings isolated from a middle part of the left descending coronary arteries of horses. Intact and endothelium-denuded preparations were compared. Rings of horse coronary arteries contracted in response to histamine in a concentration dependent manner, but some of them relaxed with lower concentrations and contracted with higher concentrations.

[Effect of UFT by oral administration using a murine hepatic metastasis model].

We examined the antitumor effect of UFT, a 5-FU derivative using a hepatic metastasis model in mice. BALB/c and CDF1 mice were given orally UFT (30 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg daily or 120 mg/kg every other day) for 20 days after inoculation of colon-26 tumor cells into the portal vein. The number of metastatic nodules and the weight of the liver decreased significantly in all groups of UFT treatment.
