Introduction: Malignant neoplasms of the head and neck, due to its anatomical location, can cause significant alterations in vital functions related to feeding, communication and social interaction of the affected patients.
Objective: To analyze the quality of life of patients with advanced malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity and submitted to radical operations with curative intent.
Material And Methods: 47 patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), in stages III and IV, underwent surgical treatment with segmental mandibulectomy and complementary radiotherapy.

Cholecystectomy leads, occasionally, to the diagnosis of subclinical primary carcinomas and rarely metastatic tumors. The authors report the diagnosis of gallbladder metastasis after an elective cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholelithiasis. Histological examination disclosed a metastasis from a lobular breast carcinoma.

Background And Purpose: Auriculotherapy is a therapeutic technique used for a wide variety of conditions. Nevertheless, similarly to any health related intervention, the clinical use of this therapy requires scientific evidence of effectiveness in order to support its rational use. The main goal of this article is to critically analyze published literature on auriculotherapy and to provide an overview of the effectiveness of this technique in the management of health disorders.

The implementation of lab setups and experimental activities in this field, are core to promoting understanding of the underlying concepts and to developing "hands-on" skills fundamental to the success of future process engineers. This paper reports the influence of different variables on the electrical potential and current behaviors of an educational cathodic protection system operated with a single drainage point.

Method: This is a systematic review with inclusion of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared both techniques. An electronic search was carried out in the Medline and Lilacs databases until June 2017.
Objective: to verify the association between the prognostic scores and the quality of life of candidates for heart transplantation.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 32 outpatients applying to heart transplantation. The prognosis was rated by the Heart Failure Survival Score (HFSS) and the Seattle Heart Failure Model (SHFM); and the quality of life by the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ).
Unverricht-Lundborg disease (ULD) is a common form of progressive myoclonic epilepsy caused by mutations in the cystatin B gene () that encodes an inhibitor of several lysosomal cathepsins. Presently, only pharmacological treatment and psychosocial support are available for ULD patients. To overcome the pathogenic effect of the ULD splicing mutation c.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study of the Jewish community residing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, we extensively evaluated the characteristics - including clinical, functional and sociodemographic - of 496 older people. Quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), while the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to measure depressive symptoms.
Introduction: The anterior commissure is an area of glottic cancer infiltration, even in early stages.
Objective: To evaluate the invasion by tumors into the anterior commissure cartilage in surgical specimens of frontolateral laryngectomy.
Methods: Forty-eight patients who had undergone frontolateral laryngectomy for T1b/T2 squamous cell carcinoma were included.

Background: Excessive sweating is a clinical condition that can be improved with type-A botulinum toxin (BTX-A).
Objectives: To evaluate and compare the largest diameter of sweating inhibition halo (SIH) of 5 different commercially available BTX-A, in five different doses, in a 6-month-long clinical evaluation.
Methods: Twenty-five adult female volunteers were injected in the dorsal trunk area with both 100 units (100UI) and 500 units (500UI) BTX-A products, reconstituted in a ratio of 1:2.

Alterations in dopaminergic signaling and neurodevelopment are associated with many neuropsychiatric disorders, such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and schizophrenia. Imbalances in dopamine levels during prenatal development are associated with behavioral alterations later in life, like hyperactivity and addiction, and it is possible that dopaminergic imbalances may have diverse effects during different neurodevelopmental windows. In this study, we investigate whether an increase in dopamine levels during the perinatal developmental window affects behavior of juvenile male and female Swiss mice.

Oncologic outcome and voice quality may support the choice for the latter To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare oncologic and functional outcomes of TOS and RT as treatment options for Tis/T1a glottic cancer. Literature research on online databases was carried out.

Interventions such as skilled birth attendants, emergency transportation to health facilities and birth preparedness have been successful at reducing such deaths, however barriers to seeking, reaching, and receiving respectful care persist.
Objective: This study aimed to identify what influences people's decisions to seek antenatal care and care during labour and birth in Timor-Leste, a low-middle income newly independent nation in South East Asia with a high maternal death rate.
Epithelial cadherins with catenins form the E-cadherin-catenin complex that acts on cell-to-cell adhesion. The loss of these complex lead to the reduction or absence of epithelial cadherin expression in the cell membrane, cytoplasmic accumulation of β-catenin and its translocation to the nucleus, contributing to carcinogenic events. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of epithelial cadherin and β-catenin in patients with laryngeal tumor.

Introduction: The post-laryngectomy state is characterized by several alterations in lung function. A reliable estimation of lung function can be very useful in laryngectomees to prevent postoperative complications and to evaluate the results of the treatment.
Objective: Characterize the presence of respiratory functional disorders and the functional pattern of laryngectomees through the use of an extratracheal device.
A strategic methodology has been developed to effectively synthesize the fac-[Re(CO)(dcbH)( trans-stpy)] complex, where dcbH = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid and trans-stpy = trans-4-styrylpyridine, which has been designed to efficiently absorb visible light. The complex exhibits outstanding trans-to- cis photoisomerization with 436 nm irradiation (Φ = 0.50 ± 0.

In this work, efficient trans ⇌ cis photoswitchings of 4-(4-cyano)styrylpyridine (stpyCN) coordinated to organometallic bipyridyl tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes, fac-[Re(CO)(NN)( trans-stpyCN)], where NN = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmb), are described. For both complexes, the true trans-to- cis quantum yields determined by H NMR spectroscopy are similar at 313, 334, and 365 nm irradiations (Φ ∼ 0.45), with a small decrease at 404 nm (Φ ∼ 0.

This study, comprising 28 patients with HNMM, aimed to establish the relationship between different mutations and outcome, define the incidence of KIT mutations in HNMM, and identify the correlation among therapeutic options, histopathological findings, demographic data, and clinical response. Clinical analysis included patient characteristics, staging, primary and palliative treatments, and disease-free survival and overall survival (OS).

In this paper, we have described for the first time a semiquantitative method to evaluate histopathological damage, taking the degree of Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae attachment to the intestinal wall of the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), an important species in Brazilian aquaculture, into account. Twelve specimens of tambaqui were collected from a fish farm. Their bowels were removed and divided into seven morphologically distinct portions according to density and distribution of the parasite studies.

Background: Suspicion of mandibular invasion directly influences perioperative strategy, requiring marginal or segmental mandibulectomy, or reconstruction in some cases. This has a considerable impact on outcome and quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of magnetic resonance and computed tomography in the prediction of mandibular invasion in patients with oral cavity cancer.
