Agricultural grasslands play an important role in conserving the biodiversity of the European cultural landscape. Both, litter cover and soil nutrient availability, change with grassland management, but it is not well-studied how seedling recruitment and growth of multiple grassland species are influenced by their single or combined effects. Therefore, we studied the effects of nitrogen fertilization (100 kg N per year and ha) and litter cover (250 g per m) on seedling recruitment and growth of 75 temperate grassland species (16 graminoid species, 51 forb species, 8 legume species) in a full factorial microcosm experiment.

To promote sustainable aquaculture, the formulation of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) feeds has changed in recent decades, focusing on replacing standard marine-based ingredients with plant-based alternatives, increasingly demonstrating successful outcomes in terms of fish performance. However, little is known about how these plant-based diets may impact the gut microbiota at first feeding and onwards. Nutritional programming (NP) is one strategy applied for exposing fish to a plant-based (V) diet at an early stage in life to promote full utilisation of plant-based ingredients and prevent potential adverse impacts of exposure to a plant-rich diet later in life.

The radiative cooling of naphthalene dimer cations, (CH) was studied experimentally through action spectroscopy using two different electrostatic ion-beam storage rings, DESIREE in Stockholm and Mini-Ring in Lyon. The spectral characteristics of the charge resonance (CR) band were observed to vary significantly with a storage time of up to 30 seconds in DESIREE. In particular, the position of the CR band shifts to the blue, with specific times (inverse of rates) of 0.

Cellular mechanical properties influence cellular functions across pathological and physiological systems. The observation of these mechanical properties is limited in part by methods with a low throughput of acquisition or with low accessibility. To overcome these limitations, we have designed, developed, validated, and optimized a microfluidic cellular deformation system (MCDS) capable of mechanotyping suspended cells on a population level at a high throughput rate of ∼300 cells pers second.

  • The Cenozoic topography of the Himalaya-Tibet orogen significantly influenced the environment and biodiversity of High Asia, but there are varying theories about how and when this uplift happened.
  • By analyzing ancient frog species in the context of climate changes and geographical evolution, researchers explore the concept of a warm temperate climate in paleo-Tibet and its effects on biodiversity.
  • The study reveals that major evolutionary changes in these frogs occurred during the early to mid-Miocene, and it suggests that spiny frogs migrated from paleo-Tibet to the Himalayas due to climate shifts, rather than adapting in place.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based combinations have revolutionized the management of first-line metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) by improving patient survival. Large phase 3 randomized trials assessing ICI-based combinations have reported complete response (CR) rates of 10% to 18% in the first-line setting. However, there is a scarcity of data about the effect of treatment of residual disease regarding CR rates improvement.

Background: Current guidelines recommend the reporting of incidental coronary artery calcification (CAC) on non-electrocardigram-gated computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest. The finding of incidental moderate or severe CAC on non-cardiac non-contrast chest CT correlates with a CAC score ≥ 100 Agatston units, a guideline-based indication for a clinician-patient discussion regarding the initiation of statin therapy. In contemporary practice, whether the presence and severity of incidental CAC are routinely reported on such CT scans of the chest is unknown.

Phylogenetic networks represent evolutionary histories of sets of taxa where horizontal evolution or hybridization has occurred. Placing a Markov model of evolution on a phylogenetic network gives a model that is particularly amenable to algebraic study by representing it as an algebraic variety. In this paper, we give a formula for the dimension of the variety corresponding to a triangle-free level-1 phylogenetic network under a group-based evolutionary model.

Systems that can image in three dimensions at cellular resolution and across different locations within an organism may enable insights into complex biological processes, such as immune responses, for which a single location measurement may be insufficient. In this Letter, we describe an in vivo two-site imaging probe (TIP) that can simultaneously image two anatomic sites with a maximum separation of a few centimeters. The TIP consists of two identical bendable graded index (GRIN) lenses and is demonstrated by a two-photon two-color fluorescence imaging system.
