Objectives: To provide guidelines for reamed autogenous bone graft (R-ABG) in nonunion surgery to best manage modifiable intraoperative factors, like storage temperature and time, for optimal graft viability. Our hypothesis was that R-ABG graft will show decreased cell viability as a function of increased time and storage temperature.

Methods: R-ABG samples were obtained using an RIA system from 10 patients undergoing harvest for the treatment of a nonunion.

Accounting for EGFR Mutations in Epidemiologic Analyses of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancers: Examples Based on the International Lung Cancer Consortium Data.

Background: Somatic EGFR mutations define a subset of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) that have clinical impact on NSCLC risk and outcome. However, EGFR-mutation-status is often missing in epidemiologic datasets. We developed and tested pragmatic approaches to account for EGFR-mutation-status based on variables commonly included in epidemiologic datasets and evaluated the clinical utility of these approaches.

Risk Stratification for Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Using a Combination of Genetic and Environmental Risk Scores: An International Multi-Center Study.

Background: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) among individuals aged younger than 50 years has been increasing. As screening guidelines lower the recommended age of screening initiation, concerns including the burden on screening capacity and costs have been recognized, suggesting that an individualized approach may be warranted. We developed risk prediction models for early-onset CRC that incorporate an environmental risk score (ERS), including 16 lifestyle and environmental factors, and a polygenic risk score (PRS) of 141 variants.

Background: An understanding of femoral anteversion and neck-shaft angle (NSA) is essential to deliver optimal orthopaedic surgical care. Despite the importance, there is little research examining the relationship between femoral anteversion and the NSA in an adult population. This study sought to determine if there is a correlation between femoral neck shaft angle and version in skeletally mature adults using computed tomography (CT) scanograms.

Development of a rapid qPCR method to quantify lactic acid bacteria in cold-smoked salmon.

Quantification of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is essential to control quality of seafood products like cold-smoked salmon (CSS). In the present study, we report the design and optimization of a dual-labelled TaqMan ™ probe targeting the V7 region of 16S rRNA gene for the detection of LAB in CSS. This quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays is useful for the simultaneous detection of the ten LAB genera communally encountered in CSS as Aerococcus, Carnobacterium, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, Macrococcus, Streptococcus, Vagococcus and Weissella.

Urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin Levels and Prostate Cancer Risk among Men in the Multiethnic Cohort.

Background: The circadian hormone melatonin has anticancer properties, and prior studies suggest a positive association between low melatonin and prostate cancer risk. The purpose of this study was to examine urinary melatonin levels and prostate cancer in a racially/ethnically diverse cohort.

Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study, including 1,263 prostate cancer cases and 2,346 controls, sampled from participants in the Multiethnic Cohort Study with prediagnostic urine samples assayed for 6-sulfatoxymelatonin, the primary melatonin metabolite.

Emergency Department Stress Radiographs of Lateral Compression Type-1 Pelvic Ring Injuries Are Safe, Effective, and Reliable.

Background: Occult instability of lateral compression type-1 (LC1) pelvic ring injuries may be determined with a fluoroscopic stress examination under anesthesia (EUA) performed in the operating room. We hypothesized that LC1 injuries, similar to some fractures of the extremities, could be radiographically stressed for stability in the emergency department (ED). Our primary objective was to determine if stress examination of LC1 fractures could be safely and accurately performed in the ED and could be tolerated by patients.
