The Knock-Down of the Chloroquine Resistance Transporter PfCRT Is Linked to Oligopeptide Handling in Plasmodium falciparum.

The chloroquine resistance transporter, PfCRT, is an essential factor during intraerythrocytic development of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. PfCRT resides at the digestive vacuole of the parasite, where hemoglobin taken up by the parasite from its host cell is degraded. PfCRT can acquire several mutations that render PfCRT a drug transporting system expelling compounds targeting hemoglobin degradation from the digestive vacuole.

R|S Atlas: Identifying existing cohort study data resources to accelerate epidemiological research on the influence of religion and spirituality on human health.

Objective: Many studies have documented significant associations between religion and spirituality (R/S) and health, but relatively few prospective analyses exist that can support causal inferences. To date, there has been no systematic analysis of R/S survey items collected in US cohort studies. We conducted a systematic content analysis of all surveys ever fielded in 20 diverse US cohort studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to identify all R/S-related items collected from each cohort's baseline survey through 2014.

Family Perspectives on Clinical Research for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis: Enhancing Equity.

Pediatric new drug trials are federally mandated, but family perspectives in multiple sclerosis (MS) research are limited. Due to MS chronicity and long-term medical system involvement, we obtained family views on research priorities and optimized methods for future studies. Focus groups were convened with families impacted by pediatric-onset MS.

Purpose: We examined a nursing faculty partnership between US and Haitian universities, where Haitian faculty completed graduate-level degrees highlighting leadership and education. This marked the first time a Haitian university awarded a master's of nursing degree.

Histopathology of Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Implications for Pathogenesis and Therapy.

Aging is associated with a number of histological changes in the choroid, Bruch's membrane, RPE, and neuroretina. Outside of the normal physiologic aging spectrum of changes, abnormal deposits such as basal laminar deposits, basal linear deposits, and soft drusen are known to be associated with AMD. Objective: This study aimed to elucidate medical weight-loss outcomes in patients unexposed or exposed to psychotropic medication(s).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated weight-loss outcomes of completers treated at an academic weight-management center between April 1, 2014, and April 1, 2016. Patients were classified as either unexposed (not prescribed psychotropic medication) or exposed (prescribed psychotropic medication) based on use of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotics during the study.

Parotid Gland Enlargement in Acromegaly: A Case Report of This Rare Finding.

We report a case that shows the pathognomonic orofacial features identified with acromegaly. Unilateral parotid gland enlargement was also present. Our investigation showed that the parotid gland swelling was non-neoplastic and part of the organomegaly complex associated with acromegaly.

Radioactive Iodine-Induced Hyposalivation: Case Report.

Radioactive iodine (I) is used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancers. Collateral damage to the salivary glands (SGs) can be anticipated. Lingual (Not Palatine) Tonsillolith: Case Report.

The lingual tonsil (LT), located at the base of the tongue posterior to the circumvallate papillae, consists of aggregates of lymphoid tissue separated by a median glossoepiglottic ligament that splits the LT into right and left halves. Tonsillar tissue on either side of the ligament exhibits discrete round nodules that project upward. Each prominence is covered by nonkeratinized epithelium and has a central crypt formed by an invagination of the overlying epithelium.

Using an educate-the-educator model, this partnership responds to an international imperative to build human resource capacity among Haitian nurses. We created a graduate program of study for nursing faculty in leadership and education at the State University of Haiti. The authors examined a 55-year-old female who had received eight intravenous infusions of a potent bisphosphonate (BP) for metastatic bone disease. A mandibular extraction was subsequently performed. At presentation, infection with suppuration and sequestrum formation were observed in the area of extraction.

Rare Submandibular Presentation of Pediatric Castleman Disease: Case Report.

Castleman disease (CD), a benign lymphoproliferative disorder that affects lymph nodes, is uncommon in children, with only approximately 100 cases published. Although 23% of pediatric CD cases are found in the neck, there is no substantial reported percentage found in the salivary glands, especially the submandibular salivary gland (SMSG). A pediatric case of CD involving the SMSG is reported because of its extreme rarity.

Sialosis, Gout Induced or Idiopathic? Case Report.

Sialosis is observed in relation to diabetes, alcoholism, and malnutrition. An assumed relation between gout and sialosis is probably based on confusion that originated from the therapeutic use of phenylbutazone for gout and the sialadenitis that the medication caused. This report describes a case of sialosis in a patient with a longstanding history of gout that was idiopathic in origin.

Simultaneous Bilateral Hypertrophies of the Parotid Gland and Masseter Muscle: Case Report.

Increased salivary demand can lead to enlarged parotid salivary glands, and increased activity of the masseter muscles can cause masseter hypertrophy. This report describes a most unusual case of simultaneous bilateral hypertrophies of the parotid gland and masseter muscle originating from the very extensive habit of chewing gum. An extensive literature review uncovered many cases of the independent existence of masseteric or parotid hypertrophy, but no example of the simultaneous occurrence of these 2 conditions.

Eagle Syndrome: Case Report.

Eagle syndrome (ES) is now defined as both an elongation of the styloid process (SP) and ossification of the stylohyoid ligament (SHL). Because subjective symptomatology is varied or can be absent, imaging is the best approach to diagnosis.
