In 1970, searching for the interspecies transmission of influenza viruses led to the first study on influenza viruses in domestic animals. Birds and mammals, including human beings, are their natural hosts; however, other animals may also play a role in the virus epidemiology. The objective was to investigate the incidence of influenza viruses in adult dogs raised in rural (9, 19.

Background: In CF-LVAD patients, the dynamic interaction of device speed, left and right ventricular decompression, and valve function can be assessed during an echocardiography-monitored speed ramp test.
Methods: We devised a unique ramp test protocol to be routinely used at the time of discharge for speed optimization and/or if device malfunction was suspected.
Context: The first year after transplantation is characterized by rapid bone loss.
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare zoledronic acid (zoledronate) and alendronate for prevention of transplantation bone loss.
Design And Setting: A randomized clinical trial was conducted at a transplantation center.
Aims: Abnormal bone metabolism and progressive demineralization have been described in patients with heart failure (HF). We hypothesized that mechanical unloading through implantation of a ventricular assist device (VAD) with subsequent haemodynamic improvement would correct abnormal bone metabolism in patients with advanced HF.
Methods And Results: Serum was collected from 14 controls, 20 patients with moderate HF, 34 patients with advanced HF undergoing VAD implantation, and 34 patients at the time of VAD explantation (mean duration: 169 ± 125 days).
Background: Controversy exists whether heart transplantation (HTx) is an appropriate treatment option for patients with cardiac sarcoidosis due to its potential recurrence and multi-organ involvement. Recent data from the United Network for Organ Sharing dataset suggest that the clinical outcome of cardiac sarcoidosis patients is equivalent or even better than that of the general HTx population.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical course of 14 patients with cardiac sarcoidosis among a total of 825 patients who underwent HTx at Columbia University Medical Center between 1997 and 2010.
Parkinsonism Relat Disord
December 2012
Unlabelled: Palliative care provides a holistic approach to symptom relief using a multidisciplinary team approach to enhance quality of life throughout the entire course of a particular illness. The care team consists of movement disorders neurologist, a palliative care physician, a wound care nurse, a spiritual counselor and a care coordinator. Palliative care concepts were applied to a group of advanced Parkinson disease (PD) patients in a dedicated Palliative Care Clinic.

Hospital leaders have stated they expect hospitalists to comanage surgical patients, participate in observation units, and screen medical admissions, in addition to providing inpatient care for medical patients. We review how the hospitalists' role in acute inpatient care, surgical comanagement, short stay units, chest pain units, and active bed management has improved throughput and patient flow.

Secretory products from adipocytes may contribute to the deterioration in glycemic control and increased insulin resistance (IR). Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is an adipose tissue-derived protein with pro-diabetogenic effects.

In total, 116 patients on CNI therapy with GFR 40-90 mL/min/1.

The SHFM is a validated multivariate risk model that uses NYHA classification to assess functional capacity rather than peak oxygen consumption (VO(2)).
Methods: Outpatients (n = 1,240) evaluated for transplant at three centers had their SHFM score calculated and peak VO(2) measured.
Cardiac transplantation is a treatment option for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) who developed refractory heart failure and/or intractable arrhythmia. However, the pretransplant characteristics and post-transplant prognosis for patients with nondilated idiopathic HC has not yet fully elucidated. Therefore, we retrospectively reviewed 813 consecutive transplant recipients undergoing cardiac transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center from 1999 to 2010 and compared the clinical course of 41 patients with idiopathic HC with that of 373 patients with ischemic heart disease and 398 patients with other heart disease.

We hypothesized that cardiac accumulation of toxic lipid intermediates inhibits insulin signaling in advanced heart failure and that mechanical unloading of the failing myocardium corrects impaired cardiac metabolism.
Methods And Results: We analyzed the myocardium and serum of 61 patients with heart failure (body mass index, 26.
Brucella suis is a dangerous biological warfare agent already used for military purposes. This bacteria cause brucellosis, a zoonosis highly infective and difficult to fight. An important selective target for chemotherapy against this disease is nucleoside hydrolase (NH), an enzyme still not found in mammals.

The characteristic structural features observed at the atomic scale for these proximal water molecules in a solvated polymer chain while undergoing the conformational transition are strongly correlated to their vibrational densities of states. Comparison of the vibrational spectrum below LCST for the proximal water with the vibrational spectrum obtained for bulk water reveals a significant fraction of the hydrogen bonding between the proximal water molecules and the polymer side groups.

Objectives: We investigated mechanisms and potential differences in stent expansion among transplant patients vs. patients with native coronary artery atherosclerotic disease ("controls").
Background: Liver dysfunction increases post-surgical morbidity and mortality. The Model of End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) estimates liver function but can be inaccurate in patients receiving oral anti-coagulation. We evaluated the effect of liver dysfunction on outcomes after ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation and the dynamic changes in liver dysfunction that occur during VAD support.

Advanced HF is associated with congestive hepatopathy and progressive functional and ultrastructural changes of the liver. We hypothesized that hepatic dysfunction is associated with impaired clinical outcome after heart transplantation.

Objective: The authors present a case series of adults with mental retardation or comparable acquired intellectual disability who underwent heart transplantation. They discuss the literature on heart and kidney transplantation in people with mental retardation and the ethical reasoning that guides how recipients of solid organ grafts are chosen.
Background: Heart failure (HF) is characterized by inflammation, insulin resistance, and progressive catabolism. We hypothesized that patients with advanced HF also develop adipose tissue inflammation associated with impaired adipokine signaling and that hemodynamic correction through implantation of ventricular assist devices (VADs) would reverse adipocyte activation and correct adipokine signaling in advanced HF.
Methods And Results: Circulating insulin, adiponectin, leptin, and resistin levels were measured in 36 patients with advanced HF before and after VAD implantation and 10 healthy control subjects.
Background: Patients in cardiogenic shock require immediate circulatory support. Outcomes of patients who underwent short-term ventricular assist device (STVAD) implantation in a community hospital (CH) as a bridge to a long-term VAD (LTVAD) were compared with those who received both implants at the same tertiary hospital (TH).
Methods: Data were retrospectively reviewed for patients with a STVAD who were bridged to a LTVAD in a TH from 1997 to 2010.
Conformational transitions in thermo-sensitive polymers are critical in determining their functional properties. The atomistic origin of polymer collapse at the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) remains a fundamental and challenging problem in polymer science. Here, molecular dynamics simulations are used to establish the role of solvation dynamics and local ordering of water in inducing conformational transitions in isotactic-rich poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) oligomers when the temperature is changed through the LCST.
