Introduction: Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been associated with cardiovascular risk in different clinical subsets. This subanalysis of the EDIVA project aimed to establish criteria for normality of PWV based on a statistical definition that considers the fundamental physiological role of aging in arterial stiffness.
Methods: A sample of 668 healthy subjects (412 male) enrolled in the EDIVA Project (a prospective, multicenter, observational study) were studied.
Three tests for typing clinical isolates of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae biovar 2 were compared: 1) standard coagglutination with type-specific antisera against serovars 1-12 of biovar 1 of A. pleuropneumoniae; 2) a previously described polymerase chain reaction system for detecting the apx genes encoding the ApxI, ApxII, and ApxIII toxins in A. pleuropneumoniae; and 3) a restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the transferrin-binding protein B gene.

Patients And Methods: A randomized double-blinded controlled study including infants at the age of 6 months was conducted.
Premature ventricular contractions originating in the right ventricular outflow tract may respond poorly to pharmacological treatment, and ablation using conventional fluoroscopically-guided systems may be complicated by the difficulty in inducing arrhythmias. We describe the use of a non-contact mapping system to ablate difficult-to-induce premature ventricular contractions originating in the right ventricular outflow tract. Five premature ventricular contractions sites in the right ventricular outflow tract were ablated in a prospective series of 4 patients.

In comparison to Bactec 460TB as the gold standard, the sensitivity of pyrosequencing for detecting isoniazid and rifampin resistance was 76.9% and 97.

Methods: The population comprised 92 infants aged 2-12 months who were nonallergic (n = 46) or diagnosed as having CMPA (n = 46). Faecal samples were analyzed by fluorescent in situ hybridization and flow cytometry, using a panel of 10 rRNA targeted group- and species-specific oligonucleotide probes.

Macroscopic single crystals of (E)-5-(diethylamino)-2-((3,5-dinitrophenylimino)methyl)phenol (DNP) were obtained from slow cooling of chloroform or dichlorometane saturated solutions at controlled temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that this compound crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group (P2(1)2(1)2(1)). Thermal analysis was performed and indicated that the crystals are stable until 260 °C.

The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and chemical reactions. The anti-inflammatory activity of the isolated compounds was investigated using the TPA-induced ear edema model.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFLead (Pb) is a metal that is non-essential to any metabolic process and, moreover, highly deleterious to life. In microbial mats - benthic stratified ecosystems - located in coastal areas, phototrophic microorganisms (algae and oxygenic phototrophic bacteria) are the primary producers and they are exposed to pollution by metals. In this paper we describe the search for bioindicators among phototrophic populations of Ebro delta microbial mats, using high-resolution microscopic techniques that we have optimized in previous studies.

The first two were synthesized without solvent in the presence of piperidine as a catalyst; the third was synthesized without a catalyst and with N,N-dimethylformamide as a solvent. In solution, the molar absorption coefficients showed absorptions at 380, 378, and 396 nm, respectively; in solid state, absorptions were at 398, 390, and 442 nm, respectively.

Methods: New Zealand rabbits were divided in two groups: autoimplanted (A) (n=13) and splenectomized (S) (n=4). The animals of group A underwent autoimplantation of splenic fragments in the greater omentum and gastric wall Both groups were evaluated by hemocytological tests, scintigraphy, immunoglobulin and C3 dosages, before the surgery and 2 and 4 months afterwards.
Introduction: movement disorders have been associated with deep brain lesions. This study was performed to describe the frequency and characteristics of movement disorders in patients with intracranial tuberculomas.
Methods: patients admitted consecutively between 1989 and 2004 to the Neurology Service of Eugenio Espejo Hospital (Quito, Ecuador), with a diagnosis of intracranial tuberculomas.
Metabolic adaptations are triggered in the maternal organism to synthesize milk with an adequate concentration of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) required to the newborn. They may be a high uptake of dietary linoleic acid and its conversion to LC-PUFAs by desaturases of fatty acids (FADS) 1 and 2 in the mammary gland (MG). It is unknown if they also occur from onset of pregnancy.

Background: Cutaneous calcification is an acquired disorder whereby insoluble, amorphous calcium salts deposit in the skin. Classically, cutaneous calcification is categorized as metastatic, dystrophic, idiopathic, or iatrogenic.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to further elucidate the underlying pathogenic mechanism for cutaneous calcification.
The ring-tailed coati (Nasua nasua) is the only coati species in which social groups contain an adult male year round, although most males live solitarily. We compared reproductive success of group living and solitary adult male coatis to determine the degree to which sociality affects reproductive success. Coati mating is highly seasonal and groups of female coatis come into oestrus during the same 1-2 week period.
