Completely reversed acute rejection is not a significant risk factor for the development of chronic rejection in renal allograft recipients.

Although acute rejection (AR) has been shown to correlate with decreased long-term renal allograft survival, we have noted AR in recipients who subsequently had stable function for more than 5 years. We reviewed 109 renal graft recipients with a minimum of 1 year graft survival and follow-up of 5-8 years. Post-transplant sodium iothalamate clearances (IoCI) measured at 3 months and yearly thereafter were used to separate recipients into 2 groups.

Optimising recovery of Campylobacter spp. from the lower porcine gastrointestinal tract.

To determine the incidence of campylobacters in Northern Ireland pigs, ileal contents and anal swabs were taken shortly after death. Direct streaking onto Preston agar, and modified charcoal cefoperazone desoxycholate agar (mCCDA), were compared, as was enrichment in selective broths prior to streaking onto the corresponding solid medium. For anal swabs direct plating on mCCDA was most efficient, with 100% of samples positive, whilst for ileal contents enrichment in mCCD broth was best with 86% of samples positive.

Congenital long segment tracheal stenosis presenting with tachypnea.

An infant born at full term presented with tachypnea, tachycardia and fatigue with feedings. Blood gases revealed hypoventilation. A rigid bronchoscopy using the Karl-Storz telescopic system revealed severe tracheal stenosis.

Transplantation and 2-year follow-up of kidneys procured from a cadaver donor with a history of lupus nephritis.

Background: Two patients underwent cadaver transplantation with kidneys from a donor with a history of World Health Organization Class IV/V lupus nephritis, and we report their clinical and pathological outcome.

Methods: The donor had a diagnosis of lupus nephritis made by renal biopsy 5 years before donation. At the time of donation, a biopsy was performed on the donor and on one of the recipients at 2 months and 1 year after the transplant.

Revised geochronology of the Casamayoran South American Land Mammal Age: climatic and biotic implications.

Isotopic age determinations (40Ar/39Ar) and associated magnetic polarity stratigraphy for Casamayoran age fauna at Gran Barranca (Chubut, Argentina) indicate that the Barrancan "subage" of the Casamayoran South American Land Mammal "Age" is late Eocene, 18 to 20 million years younger than hitherto supposed. Correlations of the radioisotopically dated magnetic polarity stratigraphy at Gran Barranca with the Cenozoic geomagnetic polarity time scale indicate that Barrancan faunal levels at the Gran Barranca date to within the magnetochronologic interval from 35.34 to 36.

Long-term maintenance of therapeutic cyclosporine levels leads to optimal graft survival without evidence of chronic nephrotoxicity.

Since the introduction of cyclosporine into clinical use, a major area of concern within the transplant community has been the fear of chronic nephrotoxicity. Although progressive renal damage does appear to occur in native kidneys of heart and liver transplant patients receiving cyclosporine, it has been our contention that its use is not a major cause of deterioration in renal allografts. We therefore undertook a study of 91 consecutive renal transplants performed over a three-year period with a minimum graft survival of 1 year and a follow-up of 7-9 years.

Treatment of childhood acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura with anti-D immune globulin or pooled immune globulin.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of initial treatment of children with acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) with anti-D immune globulin (anti-D) or pooled IgG immune globulin (IVIg).

Study Design: The medical charts of 33 children diagnosed with acute ITP from May 1995 to October 1997 were reviewed. Patient data were eligible for analysis if, for the new diagnosis of acute ITP, the patient had received either anti-D at 45 to 50 microg/kg (WinRho SD, NABI) or IVIg at 0.

The explanation of patterns in species richness ranks among the most important tasks of ecology. Current theories emphasize the interaction between historical and geographical factors affecting the size of the regional species pool and of locally acting processes such as competitive exclusion, disturbance, productivity, and seasonality. Local species richness, or alpha diversity, of plants and primary consumers has been claimed to peak in habitats of low and intermediate productivity, which, if true, has major implications for conservation.

Preservation of Vacuum-Packaged Pork Liver Paté by Fermentation.

Mammals and rainfall: paleoecology of the middle Miocene at La Venta (Colombia, South America).

A comparison of the species richness and macroniche composition of diet, locomotor and body-size classes among 16 nonvolant mammalian faunas in tropical South America reveals numerous significant positive correlations with rainfall. In particular, significant and strong positive correlations with rainfall are found in 18 attributes, including the number of nonvolant mammal species, number of primate species, number of frugivores, primary consumers, arborealists, and the number of species between 100 g to 10 kg in body weight. Estimates of annual rainfall derived from least-squares and polynomial regressions and principal components analysis yield a modal estimate of between 1500 and 2000 mm annual rainfall for the Monkey Beds assemblage at La Venta.

Sub-typing of animal and human Campylobacter spp. using RAPD.

Based on a 10-mer primer (5'-CCTGTTAGCC-3'), a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method for typing Campylobacter coli isolated from pigs was developed. The method proved effective with a high discrimination and good reproducibility. In contrast with serotyping no untypable strains were found out of a total of 269 isolates (veterinary, food and clinical) examined.

Benefits of indirect impediometry, using Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth, for the detection of Salmonella in processed animal protein.

Four hundred samples of processed animal protein were analysed for the presence of Salmonella using two impediometric methods. The direct method using both Easter and Gibson's, and Ogden's media, as defined in legislation applying throughout the UK, was less selective and sensitive, detecting 30% fewer positive samples than the indirect method using Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth. The indirect method detected 63 positive samples with a false positive rate of less than 10% and about 87% of positive samples were detected less than 12 h after being loaded onto the impedance equipment.

Dietary modification of host blood lipids affect reproduction in the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum(L.).

The feeding and reproductive performance of female lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum (L.)) infesting guinea pigs on diets containing 15% fish oil (FO) or safflower oil (SO) were investigated. Replete ticks fed on FO-fed guinea pigs weighed approximately 30% less than those on the SO-fed guinea pigs.

Hygienic Quality of Raw Pork and Chorizo (Raw Pork Sausage) on Retail Sale in Mexico City.

A survey of raw pork and a raw fermented pork sausage, chorizo, was undertaken in Mexico City to assess the hygienic quality of these two products on retail sale in a variety of outlets. Total bacterial counts and Enterobacteriaceae counts were determined and the samples were analyzed for the presence of Salmonella spp. Pork sold from refrigerated display cabinets in supermarkets and butchers' shops was of a poor microbial quality similar to that sold in street markets.

Alteration of arachidonate levels in tick salivary glands by dietary modification of host blood lipids.

Tick saliva contains prostaglandins of the 2-series, believed to facilitate bloodmeal acquisition. Because ticks cannot synthesize the prostaglandin precursor, arachidonic acid, investigations were undertaken to study the uptake, incorporation, and distribution of arachidonic acid in the salivary glands of the lone star tick in vitro and in vivo. Uptake of [3H]arachidonate by isolated salivary glands was reduced in the presence of low concentrations of arachidonic or eicosapentaenoic acids, but much higher, non-physiological concentrations of oleic and linoleic acids were required to inhibit [3H]arachidonate uptake.
