Identification of phytoplankton isolates from the eastern Canadian waters using long-read sequencing.

As important primary producers and key components of biogeochemical processes, phytoplankton communities are highly diverse and continually adapt to changes in the environment, impacting the entire marine ecosystem. Consequently, it remains important to isolate, culture and properly describe new phytoplankton strains to provide relevant model organisms for laboratory research and accurate reference sequences for identification. Here, 73 phytoplankton strains from the eastern Canadian waters were isolated and genetically characterized using a long rRNA fragment (~4000 bp) covering the 18S, ITS and 28S rRNA regions generated with long-read sequencing technology.

Cancer Registry Enrichment via Linkage with Hospital-Based Electronic Medical Records: A Pilot Investigation.

Background: Hospital electronic medical record (EMR) systems are becoming increasingly integrated for management of patient data, especially given recent policy changes issued by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services. In addition to data management, these data provide evidence for patient-centered outcomes research for a range of diseases, including cancer. Integrating EMR patient data with existing disease registries strengthens all essential components for assuring optimal health outcomes.

Feasibility of Physiotherapist-Led Rheumatology Triage: A Randomized Study.

Objective: Given global shortages in the rheumatology workforce, the demand for rheumatology assessment often exceeds the capacity to provide timely access to care. Accurate triage of patient referrals is important to ensure appropriate utilization of finite resources. We assessed the feasibility of physiotherapist (PT)-led triage using a standardized protocol in identifying cases of inflammatory arthritis (IA), as compared to usual rheumatologist triage of referrals for joint pain, in a tertiary care rheumatology clinic.

Out-of-plane arrivals recorded by drifting hydrophones during the Northern Ocean Rapid Surface Evolution Experiment.

This paper reports on an observation of three-dimensional (3D) arrivals for which the change in the direction of horizontally refracted sound is nearly 180°. The experimental site is Jan Mayen Channel (JMCh), which connects the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. During the experiment, signals from a moored source transmitting a 500-1500 Hz sweep every 4 h were recorded by three surface drifters equipped with hydrophone arrays.

What do the Public Understand About Intimate Partner Violence in the Context of Military Veteran Status and PTSD?

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) represents a significant public and social health concern and may present particular complexities in military veteran relationships which are subject to unique stressors including separations, transition to civilian life and increased risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Public understanding is vital in terms of ensuring access to services and appropriate intervention. However, little is known about the public perception of IPV in this context.

Rapid vertical exchange at fronts in the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Over the Texas-Louisiana Shelf in the Northern Gulf of Mexico, the eutrophic, fresh Mississippi/Atchafalaya river plume isolates saltier waters below, supporting the formation of bottom hypoxia in summer. The plume also generates strong density fronts, features of the circulation that are known pathways for the exchange of water between the ocean surface and the deep. Using high-resolution ocean observations and numerical simulations, we demonstrate how the summer land-sea breeze generates rapid vertical exchange at the plume fronts.

Tethered hard spheres: A bridge between the fluid and solid phases.

The thermodynamics of hard spheres tethered to a Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) lattice is investigated using event-driven molecular-dynamics. The particle-particle and the particle-tether collision rates are related to the phase space geometry and are used to study the FCC and fluid states. In tethered systems, the entropy can be determined by at least two routes: (i) through integration of the tether collision rates with the tether length r or (ii) through integration of the particle-particle collision rates with the hard-sphere diameter σ (or, equivalently, the density).

A warm jet in a cold ocean.

Unprecedented quantities of heat are entering the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean through Bering Strait, particularly during summer months. Though some heat is lost to the atmosphere during autumn cooling, a significant fraction of the incoming warm, salty water subducts (dives beneath) below a cooler fresher layer of near-surface water, subsequently extending hundreds of kilometers into the Beaufort Gyre. Upward turbulent mixing of these sub-surface pockets of heat is likely accelerating sea ice melt in the region.

Complete Genome Sequences for 36 Canadian Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium and I 1,4,[5],12:i:- Isolates from Clinical and Animal Sources.

Here, we report the complete genome sequences for 36 Canadian isolates of subsp. serovar Typhimurium and its monophasic variant I 1,4,[5]:12:i:- from both clinical and animal sources. These genome sequences will provide useful references for understanding the genetic variation within this prominent serotype.

Finding incident cancer cases through outpatient oncology clinic claims data and integration into a state cancer registry.

Cancer data from population-based cancer registries under-report cancer cases, especially for cancers primarily diagnosed and treated in outpatient clinical settings, away from hospital-based cancer registrars. Previously, we developed alternative methods of cancer case capture including a claims-based method, which identified a large proportion of cancer cases missed by traditional population-based cancer registries. In this study, we adapted a claims-based method for statewide implementation of cancer surveillance in Florida.

Missed opportunities to prevent cardiovascular disease in women with prior preeclampsia.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women in every major developed country and in most emerging nations. Complications of pregnancy, including preeclampsia, indicate a subsequent increase in cardiovascular risk. There may be a primary care provider knowledge gap regarding preeclampsia as a risk factor for CVD.

Cancer risk among career male and female Florida firefighters: Evidence from the Florida Firefighter Cancer Registry (1981-2014).

Background: Firefighters are at increased risk for select cancers. However, many studies are limited by relatively small samples, with virtually no data on the cancer experience of female firefighters. This study examines cancer risk in over 100,000 career Florida firefighters including 5000 + females assessed over a 34-year period.

Establishing a Pediatric Ophthalmology Service in Malawi: Developments in Childhood Cataract Surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report on the establishment of a Pediatric Ophthalmology Service for Malawi using childhood cataract surgery as a surrogate measure of its effectiveness.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of pediatric cataract surgery at Lions Sight First Eye Hospital, Blantyre, between 2011 and 2016. The paucity of comprehensive records allowed for the sampling of a maximum of 25 cases/year ( = 150) for comparison.

Economic burden of moderate to severe irritable bowel syndrome with constipation in six European countries.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation (IBS-C) is a complex disorder with gastrointestinal and nervous system components. The study aim was to assess the economic burden of moderate to severe IBS-C in six European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK).

Methods: An observational, one year retrospective-prospective (6 months each) study of patients diagnosed in the last five years with IBS-C (Rome III criteria) and moderate to severe disease at inclusion (IBS Symptom Severity Scale score ≥ 175).

Availability and accuracy of occupation in cancer registry data among Florida firefighters.

Objectives: Occupational exposures significantly contribute to the risk of adverse cancer outcomes, and firefighters face many carcinogenic exposures. Occupational research using cancer registry data, however, is limited by missing and inaccurate occupation-related fields. The objective of this study is to determine the frequency and predictors of missing and inaccurate occupation data for a cohort of career firefighters in a state cancer registry.
