This study demonstrates that adverse events (AEs) extracted using natural language processing (NLP) from clinical texts reflect the known frequencies of AEs associated with anticancer drugs. Using data from 44,502 cancer patients at a single hospital, we identified cases prescribed anticancer drugs (platinum, PLT; taxane, TAX; pyrimidine, PYA) and compared them to non-treatment (NTx) group using propensity score matching. Over 365 days, AEs (peripheral neuropathy, PN; oral mucositis, OM; taste abnormality, TA; appetite loss, AL) were extracted from clinical text using an NLP tool.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to reduce worker exposure to ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), a chemical used in washing endoscopes, by installing an improved exhaust system.
  • Researchers compared two types of exhaust hoods (exterior and enclosing) based on their capture velocities and found that while the exterior hood was more operable, the enclosing hood was necessary to better meet safety standards.
  • After installation, OPA vapor concentration dropped to 0.2 ppb, which, while still above the recommended limit of 0.1 ppb, shows that effective ventilation can help manage exposure to harmful substances.

Ultrasound spectroscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) methods were developed to visualize the interaction between sodium caseinate (SC) and whey protein isolate (WPI) with a mild preheat treatment (57°C, 10 min) followed by adding glucono-δ-lactone (GDL). Ultrasonic velocity changes during incubation at 25°C after adding GDL for four kinds of mixtures (no-treated SC plus no-treated WPI, preheated SC plus no-treated WPI, no-treated SC plus preheated WPI and preheated SC plus preheated WPI) were monitored. The results reveal that the mild preheating treatment of the proteins affected the timing of the increase in compressibility of each system.
