Assessment of the freshness of hen eggs destinated to human consumption is an extremely important goal for the modern food industry and sale chains, as eggs show a rapid natural aging which also depends on the storage conditions. Traditional techniques, such as candling and visual observation, have some practical limitations related to the subjective and qualitative nature of the analysis. The main objective of this paper is to propose a robust and automated approach, based on the use of pulsed phase thermography (PPT) and image processing, that can be used as an effective quality control tool to evaluate the freshness of eggs.

A multi-analyte method for detection and quantification of 16 synthetic cathinones (known also as "bath salts") in human hair has been developed and fully validated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system. About 20 mg of hair samples, previously washed and homogenized, were ultrasonicated with 1 mL HCl 0.1 M solution.

Aim: This long-term study aimed to evaluate recurrence and evolution of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT).

Methods: We reviewed "blindly" allograft biopsy specimens of women who underwent transplantation for PBC (n = 84), and women who received a transplant for chronic hepatitis C virus infection (CHCV ) (n = 108). All needle liver biopsy specimens obtained more than 6 months post-OLT were examined, including 83 specimens from 44 PBC patients and 152 specimens from 58 CHCV patients.

Aim: To measure plasma D-dimer levels in cirrhotic patients with and without ascites, assessing the effect of ascites resolution in D-dimer concentration.

Methods: Seventy consecutive cirrhotic patients (M = 44, F = 26, mean age 65 years, SD +/- 13), observed from October 2005 to March 2006 were enrolled. Circulating D-dimer levels were measured using a latex-enhanced, immunoturbidimetric test.

Anti-HBV core IgM antibodies (anti-HBc IgM) were tested by RIA in the sera from 269 patients with acute viral hepatitis (AVH), from 39 patients with chronic HBSAg+ hepatitis (CH) at various stage of evolution, in 41 asymptomatic HBsAg carriers and in 30 healthy volunteers. Anti-HBc IgM were found in 100/108 HBsAg+ AVH, in 6/161 HBsAg--AVH, in 9/39 with CH and only 1 asymptomatic HBsAg carrier. Among the chronic patients with anti-HBc IgM, 3 were HBeAg+ and 6 were anti-HBe+.
