In previtellogenic oocytes of Xenopus laevis, nearly all tRNA is included in nucleoprotein particles (thesaurisomes) sedimenting at 42 S. We evaluate the possibility of a tRNA exchange between the particles and the ribosomes during protein synthesis. We find that the particles take up tRNA after a very short incubation in vitro.

Somatostatin effect on rectal muscle in human healthy volunteers.

The effect of somatostatin on the rectal muscle has been studied in 15 healthy volunteers who received on 2 separate days and in a random order a continuous 1-hour infusion somatostatin (250 micrograms initially as an intravenous bolus and then 250 micrograms/h via infusion) or placebo (saline 0.15 M). Our results show that somatostatin significantly reduces the rectal basal tone after 30 and 50 min of infusion without modifying the rectal distensibility.

Control of the Bcg gene of early resistance in mice to infections with BCG substrains and atypical mycobacteria.

The effect of the Bcg gene on the early host response to intravenous infection with a variety of BCG substrains and some atypical mycobacteria was investigated. The numbers of live bacilli of BCG Pasteur and BCG Tice recovered from the spleens of Bcgs mice (C57BL/6, B10.A and BALB/c) at 3 weeks following infection exceeded the bacterial dose injected, whereas the number of CFU recovered from the spleens of Bcgr mice (A/J, DBA/2 and C3H/HeN) did not exceed the number of CFU injected, thus following the pattern observed in Bcgr mice and Bcgs infected with BCG Montreal.

The molybdate-stabilized nontransformed form of the glucocorticoid receptor from rabbit liver has been purified approximately 8,000-fold by a three-step procedure. The first step involved protamine sulfate precipitation which allowed a 5-6-fold purification with 85% yield. The second step, affinity chromatography using a N-(12-dodecyl-amino) 9 alpha-fluoro-16 alpha-methyl-11 beta, 17 alpha-dihydroxy-3-oxo-1,4-androstadiene-17 beta-carboxamide substituted Sepharose gel, purified the receptor 1,500-2,000-fold as calculated by specific radioactivity.

[Prospective study of the value of echocardiography and myocardial scintigraphy with Tc 99m pyrophosphate during the acute stage of right ventricular infarction].

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical values of 99mTc pyrophosphate scintigraphy and M mode and 2D echography in the diagnosis of right ventricular infarction and in the predicting of some of its complications. Fifty-two patients were prospectively studied by echocardiography and scintigraphy at the acute stage of inferior wall infarction. Scintigraphy was performed in the antero-posterior and 45 degrees left anterior oblique incidences during the first 3 days of infarction.

[Vaccination of dental surgeons against viral hepatitis B].

One hundred dental surgeons practising in western France were immunized against hepatitis B virus, using the same batch of HEVAC B vaccine from the Pasteur Institute. The vaccine was very well tolerated. Seroconversion at 10 m IU/ml was 94% after 3 injections and 98% after the booster dose.

In mice, the early host response to intravenous infection with small doses of dispersed Mycobacterium bovis BCG is controlled by the Bcg gene. After infection with a low dose of M. bovis BCG, Lyt-1+ cells were generated in the spleens of BCG-susceptible mice (Bcgs) in parallel with an increase in the proportion of phagocytic cells.

Long-term cultures of murine fetal liver retain very early B lymphoid phenotype.

Long-term cultures of murine fetal liver have been successfully established using a modification of our in vitro bone marrow culture system (14, 15). Fetal liver cells from midgestation BALB/c embryos were plated onto BAB-14 bone marrow stromal cell-adherent layers. After a 3-5 wk period, cell growth began to increase and these cells were expanded in number on fresh feeder layers.

Endurance training, VO2 max, and OBLA: a longitudinal study of two different age groups.

This study examined the effect of a 20-week training program of two groups: six middle-aged men (37 +/- 4 yrs) (GIT) and six young male subjects (20 +/- 1 yrs) (GIIT). Transplacental transmission of hepatitis B virus infection was studied in 51 Senegalese neonates born to mothers who were chronic carriers of HBsAg. 13 mothers were positive for both HBsAg and HBeAg. Mother-to-infant transmission of these two markers was different with 3 children being HBsAg positive and HBeAg negative at birth and 6 being HBsAg negative but HBeAg positive.

The right ventricular ejection fraction is rarely measured, as conventional diagnostic methods (radiology, echocardiography) are confronted with the problem of representing the right ventricle as a simple tridimensional geometrical model. This is not necessary with the radio-isotopic techniques. However, all those used for the measurement of right ventricular ejection fraction lead to important methodological problems.

The reaction of mixed valence state cytochrome oxidase (Cu(A) (2+)a(3+) . Cu(B) (+)a(3) (2+)) with O(2) at 173 K has been investigated in purified potato mitochondria by low temperature flash photolysis and rad wavelength scanning optical spectrometry in the visible region. The kinetics of the reaction have been analyzed simultaneously at six wavelength pairs (586-630, 590-630, 594-630, 604-630, 607-630, and 610-630 nanometers) by nonlinear optimization techniques, and found to proceed by a two-species sequential mechanism.
