The TET family is well known for active DNA demethylation and plays important roles in regulating transcription, the epigenome and development. In this paper, a highly sensitive pressure sensor based on fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) and the Vernier effect (VE) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We employ a closed capillary-based for the sensing cavity, and an created through femtosecond laser refractive index modulation for the reference cavity, which remains impervious to pressure changes. Connecting these two FPIs in series produces a VE-based cascaded sensor with a clear spectral envelope.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a dose-limiting painful neuropathy that occurs commonly during cancer management, which often leads to the discontinuation of medication. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, can remain viable and infectious on surfaces for days, posing a potential risk for fomite transmission. Liquid-based disinfectants, such as chlorine-based ones, have played an indispensable role in decontaminating surfaces but they do not provide prolonged protection from recontamination. Here a safe, inexpensive, and scalable membrane with covalently immobilized chlorine, large surface area, and fast wetting that exhibits long-lasting, exceptional killing efficacy against a broad spectrum of bacteria and viruses is reported.

Cyclopenta[]thiopyran, isomeric to benzo[]thiophene while isoelectronic to azulene, is involved as a building block to construct soluble organic semiconductors for field-effect transistors. Two series of angular-shaped heteroarenes based on cyclopenta[]thiopyran, that is, ( = 4, 6, 8, 10) with different linear alkyl groups and ( = 2, 3, 4) with chlorides substituted at different positions, have been straightforward synthesized. The obtained seven S-heteroarenes exhibit intriguing and similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as near-infrared absorption and high-energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbitals.

Background: Transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR) is an alternative to surgery in patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at increased risk for death from surgery; less is known about TAVR in low-risk patients.

Methods: We performed a randomized noninferiority trial in which TAVR with a self-expanding supraannular bioprosthesis was compared with surgical aortic-valve replacement in patients who had severe aortic stenosis and were at low surgical risk. When 850 patients had reached 12-month follow-up, we analyzed data regarding the primary end point, a composite of death or disabling stroke at 24 months, using Bayesian methods.

Identification of carotid artery atherosclerosis is conventionally based on measurements of luminal stenosis and surface irregularities using in vivo imaging techniques including sonography, CT and MR angiography, and digital subtraction angiography. However, histopathologic studies demonstrate considerable differences between plaques with identical degrees of stenosis and indicate that certain plaque features are associated with increased risk for ischemic events. The ability to look beyond the lumen using highly developed vessel wall imaging methods to identify plaque vulnerable to disruption has prompted an active debate as to whether a paradigm shift is needed to move away from relying on measurements of luminal stenosis for gauging the risk of ischemic injury.

An atomistic simulation study is reported for seawater pervaporation through five zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes including ZIF-8, -93, -95, -97, and -100. Salt rejection in the five ZIFs is predicted to be 100%. With the largest aperture, ZIF-100 possesses the highest water permeability of 5 × 10(-4) kg m/(m(2) h bar), which is substantially higher compared to commercial reverse osmosis membranes, as well as zeolite and graphene oxide pervaporation membranes.

The observation that the level of S-thiolated proteins (protein-thiol mixed disulfides) was transiently increased in the lens epithelial cells correlation with the transient inactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-3PD), a key glycolytic enzyme, when the cells were treated with a bolus of hydrogen peroxide, prompted our speculation that G-3PD may have been transiently thiolated at the SH sensitive active center. In the meantime, thioltransferase (TTase), a thiol regulating enzyme, whose activity remained constant under the same condition, may be regulating G-3PD and other sulfhydryl-sensitive glycolytic enzymes through thiol-disulfide exchange reactions ( Lou et al., 1998 ).
