Childhood Allergies: The Role of Maternal Depression and Anxiety, and Family Strain.

Maternal mental disorder and a negative family emotional climate are a great source of stress for many children, yet their role in the childhood development or expression of asthma and allergies remains poorly understood, particularly beyond the first 1-2 years of life. The current study tested whether childhood allergy onset and symptomatology would be predicted by (1) perinatal and any time exposure to maternal depression or anxiety and (2) current family emotional strain (whole family, mother-child). UK mothers of children aged 2-12 years (N = 328) living with them completed an online survey of measures.

Potent inhibitory activity of chimeric oligonucleotides targeting two different sites of human telomerase.

Suppression of telomerase activity in tumor cells has been considered as a new anticancer strategy. Here, we present chimeric oligonucleotides (chimeric ODNs) as a new type of telomerase inhibitor that contains differently modified oligomers to address two different sites of telomerase: the RNA template and a suggested protein motif. We have shown previously that phosphorothioate-modified oligonucleotides (PS ODNs) interact in a length-dependent rather than in a sequence-dependent manner, presumably with the protein part of the primer-binding site of telomerase, causing strong inhibition of telomerase.

Inhibition of adenovirus DNA polymerase by modified nucleoside triphosphate analogs correlate with their antiviral effects on cellular level.

Adenovirus (Ad) infection results in significant morbidity and mortality in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts. There is currently no licensed chemotherapy effective in dealing with this virus infection. In this study the anti-adenoviral activity of a group of modified nucleoside analogs was investigated.

Fluorescent focus reduction assay for the screening of antiadenoviral agents.

A method for screening of antiviral compounds against adenoviruses was established. Test compounds were diluted and plated in chamber slides for tissue culture. Drug-treated, virus-infected cultures were stained with fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugated rabbit antibodies against adenovirus hexon type 2 and fluorescent cells were counted by microscopy.
