Male SARS-CoV-2-infected patients have higher hospitalization rates, ICU admissions, and mortality compared to females, yet with unclear underlying mechanisms. We investigated the influence of biological sex on COVID-19 severity and patient outcomes. We profiled 41 circulating host response markers and identified differentially regulated proteins based on disease severity using covariates, such as sex, age, BMI, diabetes, and corticosteroid administration.

We evaluated the time courses of plasma urea and creatinine as well UUE and UCE in critically ill patients with a prolonged ICU stay. Our goal was to evaluate changes in plasma urea and creatinine in conjunction with their urinary excretion, to get a better understanding of urea handling in ICU patients.

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effects of various anesthetics, both alone and in combination, on the distribution and cytotoxic function of NK cells and their subpopulations. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from eight healthy volunteers were treated for 4 h in vitro with dexmedetomidine, remifentanil, lidocaine, propofol, sevoflurane, and combinations in clinically relevant concentrations or left untreated.

Background: Sepsis is an uncontrolled systemic inflammatory response to an infection that can result in acute failure of the function of the lung called acute respiratory distress syndrome. Leukocyte recruitment is an important hallmark of acute lung failure in patients with sepsis. Endothelial cells (EC) participate in this process by facilitating tethering, rolling, adhesion, and transmigration of leukocytes via adhesion molecules on their cell surface.
