The baby check score card was used in a busy polyclinic to identify babies with different grades of illness attending as out-patients. A total of 90 paediatric patients in the age group 1 to 6 months were screened during February to June 1995. These patients were seen by the junior physicians.

By December 1995, 36,000 babies were screened and 16 cases of congenital hypothyroidism were diagnosed. This suggests an incidence of 1:2200 which is higher than the reported incidence in Caucasian populations and similar to the incidence reported from Saudi Arabia.

Fourteen children (6M:8F) were given VGB and thirteen children (9M:4F) received LTG. The drug selection was made according to the type of seizures and associated neurological abnormalities.

Group 1 had received 4 doses of OPV, group 2 OPV at birth and 3 doses of OPV and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), and group 3 placebo at birth and 3 doses of IPV. A total of 547 infants completed the study.
