Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a major global health concern, as it is the most common primary liver cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality.
Areas Covered: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly shifted the treatment paradigm, offering promising survival outcomes. However, the controlled conditions of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) often fail to reflect real-world complexities, emphasizing the necessity for strong real-world evidence (RWE).
Background: Non-invasive tests (aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index [APRI] and transient elastography [FibroScan]) were recommended in the 2015 WHO guidelines to guide treatment decisions in people with chronic hepatitis B. We updated the systematic review and meta-analysis that informed the 2015 guidelines to inform new cutoffs for non-invasive tests for the diagnosis of significant fibrosis and cirrhosis for the 2024 WHO guidelines for chronic hepatitis B.
Methods: We searched PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, and Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science) for studies published in any language between Jan 1, 2014, and Feb 15, 2023.
Background: The presence and severity of liver fibrosis are important prognostic variables when evaluating people with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Although liver biopsy remains the reference standard, non-invasive serological markers, such as the four factors (FIB-4) score and the Forns index, can also be used to stage liver fibrosis.
Objectives: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of the FIB-4 score and Forns index in staging liver fibrosis in people with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) virus, using liver biopsy as the reference standard (primary objective).
