Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts natural darkness and desynchronizes daily rhythms in physiological processes and behavior. Previously, in rats, we have shown that dim ALAN disturbed the central circadian control and the temporal organization of behavior, and hormonal and metabolic pathways. The measurements of undisturbed daily behavioral (locomotor activity, feeding and drinking) patterns revealed reduced amplitudes and a transitory activity peak in the middle of the light (i.

We propose and implement an optical technique to access the local temperature of an erbium doped crystal by probing the electron spin population under magnetic field. We reliably extract the sample temperature in the range 2-7 K. We additionally discuss the suitability of our method as a primary standard for cryogenic thermometry.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between cis-vaccenic acid (cVA) in plasma lipid compartments and insulin sensitivity in men with hyperlipidemia.
  • It analyzes 231 hyperlipidemic men and compares them based on cVA levels, finding those with higher cVA had lower insulin and better insulin resistance markers.
  • The findings suggest that higher cVA in plasma phospholipids may be associated with improved insulin sensitivity among hyperlipidemic men, although mixed research results exist on this topic.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare pathological response rates after preoperative hyperfractionated radiotherapy with co-administration of chemotherapy based on 5FU (HART-CT) versus preoperative hyperfractionated radiotherapy (HART) in patients with resectable rectal cancer.

Methods: Patients with T2/N+ or T3/any N rectal cancer were randomized either to HART twice a day (28 fractions of 1.5 Gy) to total dose 42 Gy or to HART-CT.

Complex gut microbiota increases chickens' resistance to enteric pathogens. However, the principles of this phenomenon are not understood in detail. One of the possibilities for how to decipher the role of gut microbiota in chickens' resistance to enteric pathogens is to systematically characterise the gene expression of individual gut microbiota members colonising the chicken caecum.
