Article Synopsis
  • - A 5-year-old male Siberian chipmunk had an enlarged left testicle, leading to a diagnosis that considered various types of testicular tumors or inflammation.
  • - Upon conducting a fine needle aspiration, doctors found it to be a seminoma and proceeded with a bilateral orchiectomy (removal of both testicles).
  • - The chipmunk recovered well post-surgery, and a check-up two years later showed no signs of illness, indicating that surgery can lead to a long-term disease-free outcome in chipmunks.

A 2-year-3-month-old female guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) was referred for lethargy, weight gain and severe abdominal pain. Ultrasound examination revealed thickening and enlargement of the left uterine horn and an unremarkable right uterine horn. The animal died during ovariohysterectomy due to respiratory and cardiac arrest.

The high cardiac contractility of birds poses a challenge to traditional cardiac auscultation, particularly for the accurate determination of heart rate (HR). The objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate the feasibility of using phonocardiograms of adequate length and quality to assess HR in different avian species with a commercially available digital stethoscope, 2) compare 5 counting methods, including 2 direct reading methods (manual counting and using a semiautomatic computerized algorithm as a reference method) and 3 listening methods (progressive mental counting, counting by 10s, and counting with a smartphone application tap counter), and 3) obtain the HR in selected birds and identify a correlation between body weight and HR in different avian species. An inverse correlation on a logarithmic scale was identified between the mean body weight and HR in 60 different bird species (n = 211; R = -0.

Background: The aim of this research was to asses perfusion-defect detection-accuracy by human observers as a function of reduced-counts for 3D Gaussian post-reconstruction filtering vs deep learning (DL) denoising to determine if there was improved performance with DL.

Methods: SPECT projection data of 156 normally interpreted patients were used for these studies. Half were altered to include hybrid perfusion defects with defect presence and location known.
