Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects both life and health. However, the differentiation from other types of pneumonia and effect of kidney disease remains uncertain. This retrospective observational study investigated the risk of in-hospital death and functional decline in ≥ 20% of Barthel Index scores after COVID-19 compared to other forms of pneumonia among Japanese adults, both with and without end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).

Insects harbour diverse maternally inherited bacteria and viruses, some of which have evolved to kill the male progeny of their hosts (male killing: MK). The fly species carries a maternally transmitted MK-inducing partiti-like virus, but it was unknown if it carries other MK-inducing endosymbionts. Here, we identified two male-killing strains (Biau1 and Biau2) from and compared their genomes to elucidate their evolutionary processes.

In most eukaryotes, biparentally inherited nuclear genomes and maternally inherited cytoplasmic genomes have different evolutionary interests. Strongly female-biased sex ratios that are repeatedly observed in various arthropods often result from the male-specific lethality (male-killing) induced by maternally inherited symbiotic bacteria such as Spiroplasma and Wolbachia. However, despite some plausible case reports wherein viruses are raised as male-killers, it is not well understood how viruses, having much smaller genomes than bacteria, are capable of inducing male-killing.

A 36-year-old female was pointed out to have liver enzyme elevation by routine health checkup. Subsequent contrast-enhanced CT scan identified gigantic uterine fibroids and retroperitoneal tumor. She was referred to the gynecologist at JA Toride Medical Center and planned to undergo a uterus enucleation and biopsy of the retroperitoneal tumor.
