Effects of sex steroids on myocardial anoxic resistance.

Eight treatment groups of CD strain castrate male or female rats were injected daily with cottonseed oil (sham), testosterone propionate (50 micrograms/100 g body wt), estradiol benzoate (7 micrograms/100 g body wt), or a combination of both steroids dissolved in cottonseed oil. These physiologic replacement dosages of sex steroids, determined by bioassay procedures, were injected in a 0.1-ml bolus of cottonseed oil daily (intraperitoneally) for 16 weeks.

Radioimmunoassay determinations of prostaglandin E in pleural effusions of varying causes.

The concentrations of prostaglandin E (PgE) were measured in pleural fluid samples from 26 consecutive patients with pleural effusions of varying causes. The PgE concentrations were significantly increased in exudates when compared with transudates and provided a single measurement to separate these 2 classifications of pleural fluid. The highest concentrations of PgE were found in exudates associated with tuberculous pleuritis and metastatic lung cancer.

A new procedure was developed for the rapid isolation of the A, E and F series prostaglandins from plasma extracts. This new procedure involves the use of mini-columns packed with acid-washed Florisil to rapidly separate the A, E and F series prostaglandins. These new mini-columns give flow rates of around 1 ml/min.
