Article Synopsis
  • Dengue outbreaks in Buenos Aires Province are increasing due to the Aedes aegypti mosquito's colonization and widespread pyrethroid insecticide use for control.
  • A study identified the kdr mutations associated with pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes, documenting the 1016Ikdr + 1534Ckdr and the V410L mutations for the first time in central Argentina.
  • The findings highlight the need for effective resistance management strategies and improved diagnostics to tackle the growing pyrethroid resistance in dengue vectors.

The increasing spread of mosquito vectors has made mosquito-borne arboviral diseases a global threat to public health, leading to the urgent need for effective population control methods. Strategies based in the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia Hertig, 1936 are considered environmentally friendly, safe for humans, and potentially cost-effective for controlling arboviral diseases. To minimize undesirable side effects, it is relevant to assess whether Wolbachia is present in the area and understand the diversity associated with native infections before implementing these strategies.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of many human arboviruses such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika, which affect millions of people worldwide. Population genetic studies on this mosquito have been important in understanding its invasion pathways and success as a vector of human disease. The Axiom aegypti1 SNP chip was developed from a sample of geographically diverse A.

Iridovirus in Culex pipiens was reported for the first time in 2012. Later studies of horizontal transmission were performed, in which an interaction with the parasite Strelkovimermis spiculatus acting as viral vector was recognized. In the present study, we observed aspects of the pathology produced by an invertebrate iridescent virus in laboratory infected immature Cx.
