Male SARS-CoV-2-infected patients have higher hospitalization rates, ICU admissions, and mortality compared to females, yet with unclear underlying mechanisms. We investigated the influence of biological sex on COVID-19 severity and patient outcomes. We profiled 41 circulating host response markers and identified differentially regulated proteins based on disease severity using covariates, such as sex, age, BMI, diabetes, and corticosteroid administration.

Whereas urinary creatinine excretion (UCE) is an established marker of muscle mass, both in critically ill and non-critically ill patients, analysis of urinary urea excretion (UUE) may allow estimation of proteolysis that is associated with critical illness. We evaluated the time courses of plasma urea and creatinine as well UUE and UCE in critically ill patients with a prolonged ICU stay. Our goal was to evaluate changes in plasma urea and creatinine in conjunction with their urinary excretion, to get a better understanding of urea handling in ICU patients.

Only some subpopulations of natural killer (NK) cells have cytotoxic functionality, and the effects of anesthetics on these subpopulations are unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effects of various anesthetics, both alone and in combination, on the distribution and cytotoxic function of NK cells and their subpopulations. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from eight healthy volunteers were treated for 4 h in vitro with dexmedetomidine, remifentanil, lidocaine, propofol, sevoflurane, and combinations in clinically relevant concentrations or left untreated.

Article Synopsis
  • Measles outbreaks persist even in areas with high vaccination rates, revealing the need to study interactions among unvaccinated children, particularly in school and home settings in the Netherlands, where outbreaks have occurred since the introduction of the MMR vaccine.
  • Researchers created a contact network among primary and secondary schools based on household pairs to assess the risk of measles spread, emphasizing that schools with low vaccine uptake are highly interconnected.
  • Their network-based model accurately simulated a significant measles outbreak in 2013, showing a much better alignment with real data compared to alternative models that ignored network dynamics and vaccine data.

Background: Sepsis is an uncontrolled systemic inflammatory response to an infection that can result in acute failure of the function of the lung called acute respiratory distress syndrome. Leukocyte recruitment is an important hallmark of acute lung failure in patients with sepsis. Endothelial cells (EC) participate in this process by facilitating tethering, rolling, adhesion, and transmigration of leukocytes via adhesion molecules on their cell surface.
