Article Synopsis
  • Analyzed 421 whole-genome sequencing profiles from 382 patients to explore the relationship between initiating and driver events in clinical outcomes, revealing a 2-4 decade time lag before diagnosis.
  • Found that in hyperdiploidy cases, odd-numbered chromosome trisomies frequently occur simultaneously with chromosomal gains, suggesting these mutations happen together, especially following IGH translocations.
  • Showed that early 1q gains lead to worse outcomes compared to late gains, indicating that the timing of chromosomal changes is crucial for prognosis rather than just the number of extra copies.

Color discrimination is fundamental to human behavior. We find bananas by coarsely searching for yellow but then differentiate nuances of yellow to pick the best exemplars. How does the brain adjust the resolution of color selectivity to our changing needs? Here, we analyze the brain magnetic response in the human visual cortex to show that color selectivity is adaptively set by coarse- and fine-resolving processes running in parallel at different hierarchical levels.

Acquisition of a hyperdiploid (HY) karyotype or immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) translocations are considered key initiating events in multiple myeloma (MM). To explore if other genomic events can precede these events, we analyzed whole-genome sequencing data from 1173 MM samples. By integrating molecular time and structural variants within early chromosomal duplications, we indeed identified pregain deletions in 9.

Background: A recent study conducted at our tertiary hospital emergency department (ED) reviewed ED consultations and found that adolescents aged 16-18 years present significantly more often for trauma and psychiatric problems than adults over 18 years. Accidental injuries are one of the greatest health risks for children and adolescents. In view of the increased vulnerability of the adolescent population, this study aimed to further analyse trauma-related presentations in adolescents.

Advances in high-throughput DNA sequencing have propelled research into the human microbiome and its link to metabolic health. We explore microbiome analysis methods, specifically emphasizing metabolomics, how dietary choices impact the production of microbial metabolites, providing an overview of studies examining the connection between enterotypes and diet, and thus, improvement of personalized dietary recommendations. Acetate, propionate, and butyrate constitute more than 95% of the collective pool of short-chain fatty acids.
