Biofilm-Forming Bacteria Implicated in Complex Otitis Media in Children in the Post-Heptavalent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV7) Era.

: Chronic media with effusion (COME) and recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) are closely related clinical entities that affect childhood. The aims of the study were to investigate the microbiological profile of otitis-prone children in the post-PCV7 era and, to examine the biofilm-forming ability in association with clinical history and outcome during a two-year post-operative follow-up. : In this prospective study, pathogens from patients with COME and RAOM were isolated and studied in vitro for their biofilm-forming ability.

A Case Report of Melanoma as Acute Mastoiditis in a 10-Month-Old Female Child.

We present a rare case of transplacental-transmitted maternal melanoma to the placenta and foetus during the pregnancy of a 34-year-old woman. She was diagnosed with a melanoma at the age of 25, for which she was treated with chemotherapy. During her pregnancy, she presented with a recurrence of the disease and died 3 months after delivery.

Microbiology of acute mastoiditis and complicated or refractory acute otitis media among hospitalized children in the postvaccination era.

In the post-heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era, Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the leading cause of acute mastoiditis and other complicated or refractory acute otitis media among hospitalized children in our settings. Serotype 19A is predominant, invasive and multidrug resistant causing more than half of all mastoiditis cases, two-thirds of cases with subperiosteal abscess and all those requiring mastoidectomy. Continuous surveillance is required.

Mastoid subperiosteal abscess in children: drainage or mastoidectomy?

Objective: To evaluate the management of mastoid subperiosteal abscess using two different surgical approaches: simple mastoidectomy and abscess drainage.

Method: The medical records of 34 children suffering from acute mastoiditis with subperiosteal abscess were retrospectively reviewed. In these cases, the initial surgical approach consisted of either myringotomy plus simple mastoidectomy or myringotomy plus abscess drainage.

Incidence of non-infectious 'acute mastoiditis' in children.

Objective: The temporal bone may be the first involved site in cases of systemic disease, and may even present with acute, mastoiditis-like symptomatology. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of such non-infectious 'acute mastoiditis' in children.
