Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates ancient microbiomes in archaeological dental calculus from 102 individuals across 10 Pacific islands and one island in Southeast Asia over ~3000 years, revealing insights into human migration patterns.
  • DNA from oral microbiomes in dental calculus is better preserved than human DNA from bones, allowing for a clearer analysis of historical microbial communities.
  • The oral microbial communities from the Pacific and Island Southeast Asia are distinct from those in Europe, Africa, and Asia, indicating that geographic factors influence the composition of these ancient microbiomes.

Objectives: Evidence on the optimal frequency of laboratory testing during outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is lacking. Therefore, we investigated how often and when laboratory abnormalities occur during OPAT and which factors are associated with these abnormalities.

Methods: We performed a multicenter cohort study in four Dutch hospitals among adult patients receiving OPAT and collected routinely obtained laboratory test results.

Article Synopsis
  • Archaeobotanists utilize geometric morphometrics for identifying plant opal phytoliths, but observer variation in measurement can lead to misidentification.
  • A study involving eight researchers measured 50 samples of three phytolith types to explore inter- and intra-observer variation, which revealed differences ranging from 0 to 23% among observers and 0 to 9% within individual observers.
  • The findings underscored that inexperienced researchers showed greater variation and highlighted the importance of training and clear instructions to minimize errors in phytolith morphometry.

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence is needed.
