Neutrophil elastase-processing defect in cyclic hematopoietic dogs.

Objective: Canine cyclic hematopoiesis (CH), a model of human cyclic neutropenia and severe congenital neutropenia, is characterized by a periodic reduced neutrophil count and decreased neutrophil elastase (NE) enzymatic activity. Canine CH is caused by a mutation of AP3B1 encoding the beta3A subunit of adaptor protein complex-3 (AP-3). It has been proposed that trafficking of elastase is affected by AP-3.

Mutation in beta1-tubulin correlates with macrothrombocytopenia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Background: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) have a high prevalence of inherited macrothrombocytopenia. The purpose of this study was to determine if a mutation in beta1-tubulin correlated with presumptive inherited macrothrombocytopenia.

Hypothesis: A mutation in beta1-tubulin results in synthesis of an altered beta1-tubulin monomer.

Disseminated toxoplasmosis in a captive ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta).

A 3-yr-old secundiparous female ring-tailed lemur presented to the Auburn University Small Animal Clinic with signs of dyspnea, lethargy, and anorexia. The animal died before she could be examined, and a full necropsy was immediately performed. Provisional necropsy findings included moderate pneumonia and hepatopathy.
