Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a medical condition that causes persistent, relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It is an umbrella term encompassing two different conditions: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The standard treatment for patients with moderate to severe CD is tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibitors; however, a subset of CD patients face challenges in regard to this disease's treatment.

This study is the first to immobilize TLN on aminated superparamagnetic nanoparticles (FeO@silica-NH) aiming for higher stability, recoverability, reusability, and applicability in proteolysis and as a microbial rennet-like milk-clotting enzyme. The nanobiocatalyst developed (FeO@silica-TLN) displays hydrolytic activity on a synthetic TLN substrate and, apparently, was fully recovered from reaction media by magnetic decantation.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFSome hydrazones and Schiff bases derived from isatin, an endogenous oxindole formed in the metabolism of tryptophan, were obtained to investigate their effects on in vitro aggregation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ), macromolecules implicated in Alzheimer's disease. Some hydrazone ligands, prepared by condensation reactions of isatin with hydrazine derivatives, showed a large affinity binding to the synthetic peptides Aβ, particularly to Aβ. Measurements by NMR spectroscopy indicated that those interactions occur mainly at the metal binding site of the peptide, involving His6, His13, and His14 residues, and that hydrazone E-diastereoisomer interacts preferentially with the amyloid peptides.
