Blastocystis (initially named as Blastocystis hominis) has long been known as a protist without any clinical significance. However, there is now a huge pile of case reports where Blastocystis is blamed for the symptoms and the infection described in the patients. Introduction of the presence of as many as 17 Blastocystis subtypes while many infected individuals are non-symptomatic initially brought about the correlation between the subtypes and pathogenicity; however, the outcomes of these trials were not consistent and did not explain its pathogenicity.

Blastocystis infection has been reported to be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and chronic diarrhoea. The availability of data on the subtypes of Blastocystis found in these patient groups would be of interest in understanding the significance of Blastocystis infection in chronic illness. In this study, we identify Blastocystis subtypes found in patients presenting with IBS, IBD, chronic diarrhoea and asymptomatic patients in Ankara, Turkey.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to review 97 patients with giant pulmonary hydatid cysts and assess the clinical features and results of different operative techniques over a 27-year period.

Material And Methods: Between January 1981 and December 2007, 590 patients were operated on for pulmonary hydatidosis and 97 (17 %) of these patients had giant pulmonary hydatid cyst. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of these 97 patients.
