Background factors determining the time to intraocular lens dislocation.

Purpose: To clarify the characteristics of intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation requiring IOL suture or intraocular scleral fixation.

Methods: This retrospective consecutive case series included 21 eyes (21 patients) who required sutured or sutureless intrascleral IOL fixation following IOL extraction owing to IOL dislocation at the outpatient clinic in the Department of Ophthalmology, Saitama Red Cross Hospital, Japan, between January and December 2019. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for background diseases, location of the dislocated IOL (intracapsular/extracapsular), insertion of a capsular tension ring (CTR), and the period from IOL insertion to dislocation.

Validation of a Supportive and Palliative Care Indicator Tool Among Patients Hospitalized Due to Heart Failure.

Background: Palliative care, including symptom alleviation and advance-care planning, is relevant for patients with heart failure (HF). The Supportive and Palliative Care Indicator Tool (SPICT) is a tool for identifying patients who may benefit from palliative-care assistance but has not been validated in patients hospitalized due to HF.

Methods And Results: Clinical backgrounds, symptom burdens and outcomes were evaluated using the SPICT as assessed on admission in consecutive hospitalized patients with HF.

Diffraction contrast of ferroelectric domains in DPC STEM images.

Differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (DPC STEM) is a powerful technique for directly visualizing electromagnetic fields inside materials at high spatial resolution. Electric field observation within ferroelectric materials is potentially possible by DPC STEM, but concomitant diffraction contrast hinders the quantitative electric field evaluation. Diffraction contrast is basically caused by the diffraction-condition variation inside a field of view, but in the case of ferroelectric materials, the diffraction conditions can also change with respect to the polarization orientations.

Endogenous IFN-γ facilitates Pneumocystis infection and downregulates carbohydrate receptors in CD4 T cell-depleted mice.

IFN-γ plays a critical role in host defense against intracellular pathogens. IFN-γ is produced in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of mice infected with Pneumocystis, but the role of IFN-γ in host defense against Pneumocystis remains controversial. It has been previously reported that although exogenous IFN-γ has beneficial effects on eradication of Pneumocystis, endogenous IFN-γ has a negative impact on innate immunity in immunocompromised hosts.

A case of MCA arising from ICA: a case report.

Background: Complete mesocolic excision (CME) and central vascular detachment are very important procedures in surgery for colorectal cancer. Preoperative and intraoperative assessments of the anatomy of major colorectal vessels are necessary to avoid massive bleeding, especially in endoscopic surgery. A case with a rare anomaly in which the middle colic artery (MCA) and ileocolic artery (ICA) had a common trunk is reported.
