Palliative care services are not available in most outpatient oncology practices. A program training 11 mid-level providers from oncology practices on advanced directive discussions and supportive symptom assessment and management performed by palliative care specialists was completed. A follow-up session 9 months later identified barriers to implementation.

Objectives: To review quality-of-life issues in women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers.

Data Sources: Research studies, review articles, and medical and nursing text-books.

Conclusions: Women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers carry a heavy physical and emotional burden because of surgical morbidity, chemotherapy toxicities, loss of fertility, changes in body image, sexual concerns, and altered relationships.

Mammography.

Breast cancer is the most common female malignancy in the USA and second only to lung malignancy in cancer mortality. The only screening modality that effectively detects early breast cancer and decreases mortality is mammography. Because many females turn to obstetrician gynecologists for breast cancer screening, an understanding of the benefits and limitations of mammography and the breast imaging reporting and data system is imperative.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among perceived susceptibility, demographic variables, and use of sunscreen in health care providers, using the Health Belief Model Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 90 participants from the Southeast, ages 24 to 60 years. This sample included nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, and physicians.

Approximately 5-10% of breast and ovarian cancer cases are due to an inherited susceptibility. The majority of inherited breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility is due to mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes; however, other genes responsible for inherited susceptibility to these diseases are yet to be identified. A small proportion of inherited breast and ovarian cancers are due to other genetic cancer susceptibility syndromes including Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden disease and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer.
