Long-term survival and health-related quality of life after in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Introduction: In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is an adverse event associated with high mortality. Because of the impact of IHCA more data is needed on incidence, outcomes and associated factors that are present prior to cardiac arrest. The aim was to assess one-year survival, patient-centred outcomes after IHCA and their associated pre-arrest factors.

Spontaneous rupture of a non-parasitic splenic cyst.

Rupture of a non-parasitic splenic cyst is a rare but possibly dangerous complication with 21 cases described so far. We present a 46-year-old woman who presented with acute abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a spontaneous ruptured splenic cyst that was successfully treated by laparoscopic splenectomy. Histological examination showed characteristics corresponding with a non-parasitic congenital cyst that had lost its epithelial lining.

Interaction of obesity and atrial fibrillation: an overview of pathophysiology and clinical management.

Obesity, defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of ≥30 kg/m2, is the most common chronic metabolic disease worldwide and its prevalence has been strongly increasing. Obesity is associated with various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Regarding heart rhythm disorders, obesity is associated with an increase in atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice.

Deep Neuromuscular Block Improves Surgical Conditions during Bariatric Surgery and Reduces Postoperative Pain: A Randomized Double Blind Controlled Trial.

Background: It remains unknown whether the administration of a deep neuromuscular block (NMB) during bariatric surgery improves surgical conditions and patient outcome. The authors studied the effect of deep versus moderate NMB in laparoscopic bariatric surgery on surgical conditions and postoperative pain.

Methods And Results: One hundred patients scheduled to undergo elective bariatric surgery were randomized to a deep NMB (post-tetanic-count 2-3) or a moderate NMB (train-of-four 1-2).

Acute appendagitis of the ligamentum teres hepatis: clinical, ultrasound, and computed tomographic findings.

Purpose: To describe the clinical, ultrasound (US), and CT findings in three patients with acute appendagitis of the ligamentum teres hepatis.

Methods: A retrospective search of cases over a 4-year period was performed and yielded three patients with acute appendagitis of the ligamentum teres hepatis. The diagnosis was confirmed by US, CT, and clinical follow-up in all three cases.
