Atypical Variants of Spinal Dysraphism: A Case Series.

The aim of this study is to present and discuss atypical instances of spina bifida (SB) within a Nigerian paediatric cohort, highlighting their distinctive clinicoradiological features. Additionally, a brief literature review is provided to contextualise these congenital anomalies. This series comprises eight rare cases of SB managed in a Nigerian neurosurgical facility.

Recovery of Learning and Memory Deficits Despite Persistent Pyknosis of the Hippocampal Pyramidal Neurons of Adult Hydrocephalic Mice.

Background: The hippocampal alterations resulting from hydrocephalus are associated with various cognitive dysfunctions. Reduced learning and memory are early functional deficits that recover with time in experimental hydrocephalus. This study investigated the recovery processes of learning and memory loss in relation to the morphology of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and the degree of expansion of the ventricles.

A Geospatial Analysis of the Availability, Distribution, and Accessibility of Neurosurgical Facilities, Workforce, and Infrastructure in Nigeria; and Projection Towards 2050.

Objective: There has been a modest but progressive increase in the neurosurgical workforce, training, and service delivery in Nigeria in the last 2 decades. However, these resources are unevenly distributed. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the availability and distribution of neurosurgical resources in Nigeria while projecting the needed workforce capacity up to 2050.

Vanadium administration ameliorates cortical structural and functional changes in juvenile hydrocephalic mice.

Vanadium is a prevalent neurotoxic transition metal with therapeutic potentials in some neurological conditions. Hydrocephalus poses a major clinical burden in neurological practice in Africa. Its primary treatment (shunting) has complications, including infection and blockage; alternative drug-based therapies are therefore necessary.

Management and outcomes of pediatric traumatic brain injury in Africa: a systematic review.

Objective: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) carries a major global burden of disease; however, it is well established that patients in low- and middle-income countries, such as those in Africa, have higher mortality rates. Pediatric TBI, specifically, is a documented cause for concern as injuries to the developing brain have been shown to lead to cognitive, psychosocial, and motor problems in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reported demographics, causes, management, and outcomes of pediatric TBI in Africa.
