Background: Ramadan during pregnancy is associated with adverse offspring health outcomes. Recent evidence from Europe indicates that maternal diet during non-fasting hours might alleviate these effects. This study describes fasting, diet, and sleep habits among pregnant Muslims in Kaduna, Nigeria, and assesses impacts on neonatal health in this setting.

Bedřich Smetana's hearing loss could be caused by chronic mercury intoxication.

Bedřich Smetana's illness associated with complete hearing loss has been linked to various diseases in a long-running discussion. Senile dementia, atherosclerosis, progressive paralysis in lues are mentioned, while the ototoxicity of mercury is neglected. Its high concentration in the composer's skeletal remains was demonstrated by the authors of this article immunohistochemically and especially by the neutron activation analysis (NAA) method 23 years ago.

Quality of life in patients after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

Aim: To evaluate the most important factors of quality of life in patients after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

Materials And Methods: Patients with unilateral sporadic occurrence of vestibular schwannoma who underwent surgery via suboccipital-retrosigmoid approach were included in the prospective study (2018-2021). Patients after previous Leksell gamma knife irradiation (or other methods of stereotactic radiosurgery) were excluded.

High incidence of occult familial cases amongst Czech patients with head and neck paragangliomas.

Introduction: Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors, which are mostly benign in nature. Amongst all genes, Succinate Dehydrogenase Subunit D () is the most commonly mutated in familial HNPGLs. In about 30% of HNPGLs, germline mutations in can also occur in the absence of positive family history, thus giving rise to "occult familial" cases.

Comparison of narrow-band imaging with autofluorescence imaging for endoscopic detection of squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil.

Purpose: Early detection of mucosal neoplastic lesions is crucial for a patient's prognosis. This has led to the development of effective optical endoscopic diagnostic methods such as narrow band imaging (NBI) and autofluorescence (AFI). Independent of each other, both of these methods were proven useful in the detection of mucosal neoplasias.
