Mapping Emerging Contaminants in Wastewater Effluents through Multichromatographic Platform Analysis and Source Correlations.

This study explores the correlation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in wastewater effluents using liquid chromatography (LC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) with derivatization, all coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Over 300 compounds, including frequently overlooked highly polar and nonpharmaceutical CECs, were identified. Monitoring programs mainly focus on reducing variability and assessing pollution in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents under dry weather conditions, often neglecting wet-weather discharges.

Sustainable 4D Printed Meta Biocomposite Materials for Programmable Structural Shape Changing.

Biological structures provide inspiration for developing advanced materials from sustainable resources, enabling passive structural morphing. Despite an increasing interest for parsimony-oriented innovation, sustainable shape-changing materials based on renewable resources remain underexplored. In this work, the architecture of a single plant fiber cell wall (S, for instance) is simplified to design novel concepts of 4D printed tubular moisture-driven structural actuators, using the hygromorphic properties of continuous flax fiber (cFF) reinforced materials.

Cost-effectiveness of diabetes screening and diagnosis services for people with TB in the Philippines.

Aim: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death in low- and middle-income countries, and diabetes is a known risk factor for progression to active TB disease. While the Philippines national strategic plan for TB aims to screen 90 % of TB cases for diabetes, the cost-effectiveness of screening is not well known.

Methods: We constructed a decision tree model to assess the cost-effectiveness of providing diabetes testing for 90% of people with an unknown diabetes status at their TB diagnosis and subsequent routine diabetes care, compared to the scenario of providing TB treatment only.
