Mead is a not very diffused alcoholic beverage and is obtained by fermentation of honey and water. Despite its very long tradition, little information is available on the relation between the ingredient used during fermentation and the aromatic characteristics of the fermented beverage outcome. In order to provide further information, multi-floral blossom honey and a forest honeydew honey with and without the addition of black currant during fermentation were used to prepare four different honey wines to be compared for their volatile organic compound content.

We report an extensive lipoma of the left index digit in a 75-year-old woman. This location is very rare. A review of the literature revealed only two prior cases of digital lipoma occurring distal to the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Burn victims have severely depressed cellular immunity and despite careful hygiene, antibiotics and early surgical therapy the infection rate remains high. The assessment of plasma neopterin levels can be considered as an indirect measurement of macrophage function, because activation of macrophages is accompanied by the release of D-erythro-neopterin. The influence of burn trauma on neopterin levels was investigated to determine whether neopterin estimations might have a prognostic or diagnostic value.

Controlled tissue expansion and fasciocutaneous flaps are useful in the aesthetic and functional reconstruction of scar areas. We present three cases, in which we have combined both methods with improved results. Large scar areas were reconstructed with minimal donor-site morbidity.
