24 type II diabetic patients who displayed persistent fasting hyperglycaemia on maximal sulphonylurea therapy were treated with a combination of insulin and sulphonylurea agents. Satisfactory control of blood glucose levels was achieved by means of this therapeutic regimen. The good results on carbohydrate metabolism in these patients were maintained over a follow-up period of one year.

Peroral application of caffeine or theophylline causes a significant increase of the free fatty acids and the free glycerol of the serum; blood sugar and cholesterol are not influenced. FFA and free glycerol decrease during the day by food intake, blood sugar and triglycerides rise. The ingestion of coffee (1-3 cups) does not influence fat and carbohydrate metabolism.

For a period of 3 months the action of Bendigo on raised serum lipid levels was tested in 28 patients. Serum cholesterin dropped from 264 to 215 mg%, and triglycerides from 212 to 117 mg% - both changes being statistically significant. The change in the serum lipids may be ascribed to an inhibition of lipolysis, mainly induced by mesoinosit-hexonitolnicotinate.
