Article Synopsis
  • Falls are a significant health risk for older adults, impacting their quality of life, and this study focused on identifying risk factors among Lebanese patients who take multiple medications.* -
  • In a study of 850 community-dwelling older patients, nearly 20% reported falling in the past three months, with key predictors for falls being loss of appetite, functional dependence, drowsiness, and the use of beta-blockers.* -

Background: The effectiveness of the body physiological regulatory mechanisms declines in late life, and increased Blood Pressure Variability (BPV) may represent an alteration in cardiovascular homeostatic patterns. Intrinsic Capacity (IC) has been proposed by the World Health Organization as a marker of healthy aging, based on individual's functional abilities and intended at preserving successful aging. We aimed to investigate the association of visit-to-visit BPV with IC decline in a population of community-dwelling older adults.

Background And Purpose: White matter lesions (WMLs) are frequent in sickle cell disease (SCD), with a prevalence described to be as high as 53% by age 30. Cerebrovascular regulation and cardiovascular autonomic regulation, more specifically the sympatho-vagal balance, can be altered in SCD. In this study the association between WMLs, cerebrovascular regulation and sympatho-vagal balance was assessed in SCD patients.

Background: Blood pressure (BP) postural changes, both orthostatic hypotension (OHYPO) and orthostatic hypertension (OHYPER) are common in older adults. Few studies have investigated their association with cognition, particularly for OHYPER, an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. We aimed to assess the association between OHYPO, OHYPER and cognition in non-institutionalized older subjects.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of potentially inappropriate drug prescribing (PIDP) using a combination of explicit and implicit criteria in a sample of Lebanese older adults taking 5 or more chronic medications per day in ambulatory care settings and to identify which factors were associated with PIDP. The explicit criteria included five different lists: Beers, Laroche, European Union (EU(7)-PIM list), STOPP/ START, STOPP Frail, and Alert and Mastering of Iatrogenesis issued by the French High Authority of Health. We also performed a sensitivity analysis to compare the potentially inappropriate medications according to each criterion.
