The prevalence of opioid misuse diagnostic codes in children with sickle cell disease.

Hospitalized patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) may use opioid medications for both acute and chronic pain management. Use of these medications may unintentionally generate diagnostic codes for opioid misuse including "opioid use," "opioid abuse," and "opioid dependence," which connote a behavioral problem or addiction. In this study, we sought to compare diagnostic codes for opioid misuse amongst hospitalized patients with and without SCD.

Novel insights into negative pressure wound healing from an in situ porcine perspective.

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is used clinically to promote tissue formation and wound closure. In this study, a porcine wound model was used to further investigate the mechanisms as to how NPWT modulates wound healing via utilization of a form of NPWT called the vacuum-assisted closure. To observe the effect of NPWT more accurately, non-NPWT control wounds containing GranuFoam™ dressings, without vacuum exposure, were utilized.

Sexual dimorphisms in three-dimensional masticatory muscle attachment morphometry regulates temporomandibular joint mechanics.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders disproportionally affect females, with female to male prevalence varying from 3:1 to 8:1. Sexual dimorphisms in masticatory muscle attachment morphometry and association with craniofacial size, critical for understanding sex-differences in TMJ function, have not been reported. The objective of this study was to determine sex-specific differences in three-dimensional (3D) TMJ muscle attachment morphometry and craniofacial sizes and their impact on TMJ mechanics.

Enhanced nursing self-awareness and pharmacotherapy knowledge-base: peer-teaching and nursing/pharmacy interprofessional education.

Peer-teaching and interprofessional education can help students define individual healthcare roles, establish improved interprofessional relationships, and improve overall knowledge-base. Peer-teaching was provided by student pharmacists completing Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) for nine weeks to undergraduate student nurses. 4 student pharmacists and 25 student nurses participated in this study.
