Level of glial cell derived neurotrophic factor in the blood plasma of rheumatoid arthritis patients and its relationship with alexithymia.

Introduction: Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has an important role in the pathogenetic mechanisms and clinical manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Alexithymia is associated with a severe clinical course and worse prognosis, while the relationship between alexithymia and GDNF in RA patients has not been investigated before. The aims of the study were to investigate the GDNF level in blood plasma in RA patients depending on the presence of alexithymia and to evaluate the relationship of GDNF level with clinical manifestation and quality of life.

Methods: This phase 3, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, active-controlled, equivalence study comprised a 24-week initial treatment period (results reported here) and a 24-week secondary treatment period.

Clinical characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis patients depending on neuropathic pain.

Introduction: Neuropathic pain (NP) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an important factor that complicates patients' everyday activities and leads to a decrease of life quality. Detection and diagnosis of NP can be facilitated by the use of screening instruments, and the comparative assessment of the sensitivity of different scales is important for improving the diagnosis and personalizing the treatment of AS.The aim of the study was to analyze prevalence of NP in patients with AS and clinical features of AS patients depending on the presence of NP.
