Life skills, mathematical reasoning and critical thinking: a curriculum for the prevention of problem gambling.

Previous studies have shown that youth are two to three times more likely than adults to report gambling related problems. This paper reports on the development and pilot evaluation of a school-based problem gambling prevention curriculum. The prevention program focused on problem gambling awareness and self-monitoring skills, coping skills, and knowledge of the nature of random events.

The impact of group education on participants' management of their disease in lupus and scleroderma.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the pilot education programmes, entitled 'Focus on Lupus' and 'Focus on Scleroderma', upon participants' management of their disease.

Methods: Five people with lupus and five with scleroderma were invited to take part in individual semi-structured interviews. Qualitative analysis of transcripts was performed using a framework approach.

Background And Objectives: Postal questionnaires are a frequently used method of obtaining information from general practitioners. However, getting GPs to return questionnaires or participate in research can be challenging. We wanted to ascertain reasons why GPs identified as 'routine non-responders' to postal questionnaires, do not participate in this type of research.

Background: Urinary incontinence is a significant health problem for older people. Many people with incontinence do not seek services. Simple and effective treatments exist in primary care.

The incidence and mortality for meningococcal disease associated with area deprivation: an ecological study of hospital episode statistics.

Aims: To determine whether incidence, mortality, and case fatality for meningococcal disease (MD) differs by area deprivation, and if this has changed over time.

Methods: The population of children aged less than 5 years with MD was analysed as quintiles of area deprivation scores over two time periods, 1995-99 and 1991-94. Annual age standardised rates were calculated and the association between incidence, mortality, and area deprivation quintiles assessed using Poisson regression and the risk ratios determined.
