Sequence variant affects GCSAML splicing, mast cell specific proteins, and risk of urticaria.

Urticaria is a skin disorder characterized by outbreaks of raised pruritic wheals. In order to identify sequence variants associated with urticaria, we performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for urticaria with a total of 40,694 cases and 1,230,001 controls from Iceland, the UK, Finland, and Japan. We also performed transcriptome- and proteome-wide analyses in Iceland and the UK.

[Patient satisfaction with care and interaction with staff in the Acute Cardiac Unit at Landspitali - The National University Hospital of Iceland].

Introduction: The Icelandic health care system ranks favourably in international comparison but patients' experience of interaction with the health service has not been well studied. The goal of this study was to examine the satisfaction of patients admitted to the Acute Cardiac Unit (ACU) at Landspitali - The National University Hospital of Iceland.

Methods: A questionnaire based on the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III was mailed to patients admitted to the ACU between 1 January and 29 February 2012.

P53 mutations analysis in benign and malignant breast lesions: using needle rinses from fine-needle aspirations.

The fine-needle aspiration (FNA) technique is a widely used method for diagnostic assessment of breast diseases. In the current study we investigated the feasibility of sampling material for genetic studies from the same FNA samples as would be used for breast cytology. After making smears for cytological examination, the needle was rinsed into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) in an Icelandic population: the role of HPV DNA testing based on hybrid capture and PCR assays among women with screen-detected abnormal Pap smears.

This study was based on 358 cases with abnormal smears referred for colposcopy and HPV DNA testing. We analysed: 1) the frequency of different grades of cyto- and histopathologic findings; 2) the frequency and relative amount of HPV DNA with the hybrid capture assay (HCA) in swabs, and the frequency of HPV with PCR in swabs (-S) and biopsies (-B); and 3) the frequency of HPV types according to the grade of the cyto- and histopathologic findings. Of all cases, 95% were positive with all HPV tests combined.

Ameloblastoma of the maxilla. Report of three cases.

Three cases of ameloblastoma of the maxilla are presented. Symptoms, diagnostic procedures and therapy are discussed in relation to these cases. It is stressed that surgery of a maxillary ameloblastoma must be radical from the beginning.
