The impact of selenium on the course of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was mainly assessed by monitoring the titer of antithyroid autoantibodies in most of the studies conducted hitherto. On the other hand, the imbalance in activity of T cells such as Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg may be relevant in the pathogenesis of this disease. Hence, the assessment of changes in the secretion of cytokines by these cells during selenium supplementation in patients with HT seems to be an important issue and was the main goal of this study.

This study was performed to investigate selenoenzyme activities and trace element concentrations in thyroid tissues, with reference to other parameters routinely used to characterize thyroid function. This was to reveal relevant parameters as possible additional markers of tumor grade, clinical course, and prognosis of thyroid disorders. The tissue samples were obtained during surgical treatment (total or near total thyroidectomy) of 122 patients with different types of thyroid tumor.

Preface: Nonpalpable nodules in the thyroid are frequent and estimated to be found in 50% of people above 50 year of age when goiter in adult population is found in 4-10%. Thyroid nodules in 5% are of neoplastic character and their diligent investigation is necessary with USG, FNA and certain biochemical factors evaluation. Screening is an important part of diagnosing thyroid gland.
